i'v used this book for direction in taking the clep in english lit and the gre in lit in english. obviously it isn't comprehensive, just skims, but covers the pertinent dates, figures, and works to get you going. i recommend the Masterplots series for in-depth essays on these topics -- much better than those cliff notes which bore me.
I am currently studying to take the Oklahoma Teacher's Certification Exam in English. This book has really helped me. I don't know what I would have done without it!!When I began studying, I only had four weeks to study. Right now, I still have two weeks left, and I am actually starting to understand British/English literature. Please keep in mind; I have only had one literature class in my life, and I took it over 14 years ago. Basically, I was literature illiterate. This book has really help me a lot.However, I must admit that I have done a lot of additional research. [...]I also bought the American Literature EZ 101 because the exam will cover both areas. That book is equally as excellent as this one. By using those two books, by comitting to some serious study time, and by using wikipedia when I got stuck, I feel literate!!I truly believe that this book is a good resource for self-study--if you're willing to study!! It WILL NOT give you every little detail; it is designed as a study guide to help you get through a college class where you actually have a teacher to help when you get "stuck". On the other hand, if you're looking for a study guide, I don't think you can beat it. It is excellent!!
This book is really wonderful. I took the English Literature CLEP test, and I think this was the only book I used to study for it. It has everything you need to know in a clear and concise form without the fluffy stuff. If you want a great guide to everything English Lit - get this book!
I used this book almost exclusively when I studied for the English Literature CLEP exam, and I passed with flying colors. I highly recommend it to anyone who needs a synopsis of the great English Lit works and authors.
I ordered this book based on other reviews. It is smaller than I had expected but does provide a summary of authors and styles. I am using this book to study for the Praxis II exam in English and Literature Content. Would like to have it be more substantial but am fairly happy with this item.
I bought this book to study for the English Literature CLEP test. It only contains the bare essentials, so it is definitely not enough to prepare for the test. Much of the test is analysis, and this book offers nothing that would help in that area. Furthermore, taking a practice test before taking the actual test is pretty important. I wish this book had that.Other things I have used to study were spark notes for novels, plays, and poems, "The Complete Idiot's Guide to English Lit", CLEP review book to take a practice test, and the Mometrix Study Guide. I would say that you will be able to pass using this book, spark notes, and practicing with the CLEP test. Spark notes are free online, and the CLEP test can be downloaded from the website for $10. Altogether, it will cost you under $20.
I chose an audio version to listen to when I jog, as I've done with other study helps before. Problem is the narrator is a little monotone and I'm not always catching names/spellings as he moves through all the text with a slight accent. I need to use this to study, so I wish I had ordered the hard copy text. I'm sure it's fine for some, but it doesn't keep me engaged and I keep tuning it out.
This is concise. Includes historical info. Doesn't talk down to you even though it's brief. Very well done to cover so much in such a small book. Great study guide. I'm using it to study for teacher's licensing exam. So glad I found it - covers literature/historical context better than the all-in-one exam guide I found at the library.
