The cliche of offering 'Something for everyone' is, in the case of Prepper's Home Defense, an apt description.A good portion of the book deals with steps that are best implemented in a group environment; a group of preppers that are physically close together and can build a support team. If you are fortunate to be in such a situation, that is fantastic and these parts of the book can be used to implement security. I personally am not in such a situation, but I still learned a lot of good ideas to consider in those parts of the book.Other parts deal with steps a couple or individual can take, and those more isolated can gain much from those discussions. In a country or area with strict weapon controls? There are ideas presented to still secure and protect yourself. Have you heard the '3 is 2 and 2 is 1' adage? Meaning you should not count on just one solution to any need, you need to have plan 'B' and then plan 'C'. This book gives lots of smart alternative ideas you can use not just as primary solutions, but as backup plans as well. The author also takes time to warn about remaining inside the boundaries of the laws that effect you, at least as long as there remains a Rule Of Law. I appreciate this, as so often inside of the prepper movement we see ideas that are not only dangerous, but likely to put you on the wrong side of the law. Topics that could get you in trouble, either physically or legally, are flagged appropriately through out the book. The book contains lots of general excellent content, as I said, something for everyone. As such, it would make an excellent first read into this area of prepping. Probably the best first read I have seen, and I've looked at and read a lot of books. It would make a great book for a prepper group to use as a book study. When viewed as an introductory read into the topic of prepper security and protection, I give it its 5 stars. But realize that it is not a detailed reference work, with step by step diagrams and lengthy chapters on each topic. The book covers LOTS of topics, and most of them could warrant a book of their own. This book gets you thinking, and gives some concrete ideas that can be implemented.Whether you have a fully implemented and staffed fortress, or you have a rusty pen knife, this book belongs on your bookshelf, AFTER you have worn the pages and covered it in highlighter.
Numerous authors have taken on the task of explaining how to defend one's home. Many have started from the perspective of a bunker, well armed and fortified. This author takes a different approach: he starts from basic concepts of defense, works through simple definitions of both the concepts and the tangible items necessary for defense, and explains to the reader how to go from a position of low defendability to a much higher level of dendability. Jim Cobb not only explains what needs to be done to strengthen a home, and how it should be done - he also touches upon the most necessary concept, that of mindset needed to function as a credible and prepared defender. This book is great for one just getting into prepping - but even if you are familiar with this subject, chances are that you'll learn from this book. The book is by no means an encyclopedia - but it is easily the best primer on home defense that you can find. Buy this book first - read it, and you'll be well aware of what you'll need to achieve to ensure you, your family, and your home can be defended.
I was blown away by how many aspects of home defense this book manages to cover. From watch dogs to safe rooms to children and operational security, this book manages to offer some practical advice in a dizzying variety of areas related to home defense. The author had some excellent quotes throughout the book and had good advice on defense in general as well. The tone of the book was not sensational or scare-mongering, but rather level-headed.This book had an excellent linked and structured Table of Contents. As this book is not encyclopedic in nature, I would have preferred to have more web links to resources.Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone as an overview of the necessary considerations for effectively defending a home!If you enjoyed this book, you may also enjoy Tactical Bible Stories: Personal Security Tips from the Bible a book that uses Bible stories to illustrate personal security principles or if you want another book with some more specific advice on making sure you have the lightest and most efficient BOB possible, I recommend Ultralight Survival: Make a Small and Light Bug Out Bag That Could Save Your Life.
After following his blog for some time I really anticipated great deal of help in defending my family, but what I got was a scatter-gun effect of some really good jewels hidden amongst birdshot. Then the jewels had very little substance to them. It does have something to offer to a newby for basic ideas but then no followup. There are no websites to see about more info, which might be okay, but also no words to search on the net. Please, if I am new at something I need direction. To me it was like reading a book on storing food that says you should can some food, dehydrate some, etc. and that's it, no in depth info and no places to look for more. I like his website and have learned a lot so, in spite of this books faillings I look forward to better from him next time.
This book offers so much more than just shoot the bad guys. From the type of dog you might want to have, to what type of plants and where and how to plant them. What common items might be used as weapons, inside and outside the home. For someone who is very naive about defense it has been an eye opener. He gets into a lot of different types of weapons and what would be best for each individual and situation. There is information for the novice like myself, right up to tactical stuff.Definitely worth the money.
