I bought this book as a gift for an 8 year old child. I decided to read one of the stories in the book at random just to see what it was like. Upon doing so, I encountered a child molestation account and felt the need to continue to read before giving the book to the child. The more stories I read, the more disturbed I was at the thought that this book is recommended for children of age 8-12. The stories ranged from "my friend died from accidentally strangling himself as he held a rope out a car window" to "my friend and I almost died from a boat running over us" to "my father molested me(not to mention the graphic detail of the story)." None of these stories are ones that I would enjoy reading as an adult and surely would never want to expose a child to such stories. I think the book should be taken off of the shelves and will be trying to return my copy for a refund.
I have not read this book, but my nine year old daughter has read and enjoyed most of it. Last night though, she cried herself to sleep after reading graphic stories (near the end of the book) by an incest victim whose father was sent to jail and the daughter of an injection drug user who woke up one night with police pointing guns at her. I'm sure the inclusion of these stories was well-intentioned, but there's no way they are "chicken soup" for the average kid's soul.
I thought this would be a fun encouraging book for my son. He started telling me some of the stories. A boy gets strangled to death while driving in a car, another dies while playing on a moving train, parents doing drugs, another with the father molesting his little girl for six years. Unbelievable. My son said instead of the tag line courage, hope and laughter is should be fear, despair and sadness.
DID ANYONE WHO LEFT 5 STARS ACTUALLY READ THIS BOOK? THIS WAS SO NOT FOR CHILDREN. PLEASE DO NOT LET YOUR CHILDREN READ THESE DISTURBING STORIES.READ THE OTHER PEOPLES REVIEWS WHO ONLY LEFT 1 STAR. MY 12 YEAR OLD THOUGHT THIS BOOK WAS HORRIBLE. HE HAD NEVER HEARD OF INCEST UNTIL HE READ THIS BOOK. IT WASN'T EVEN UPLIFTING BECAUSE MY SON SAID THE FATHER DID IT TO HER FOR YEARS BEFORE SHE TOLD ANYONE. I FEEL LIKE SUING THE PUBLISHER.
The series of Chicken Soup books has held my attention since their first publication. Perhaps this is one of the most important books in the series. The stories will also help everyone realize that life is a journey. The words will inspire you to dream, to be more positive, and to realize you are not alone.When you purchase this book, think of it as a life enriching tool. The topics of love, friendship, family, attitude, perspective, death, dreams, obstacles, choices, tough stuff and eclectic wisdom are discussed in stories, poems and passages.The stories are short enough so you could read one a day. There are also funny cartoons, poems and plenty of "kid" wisdom. I give this book my highest recommendation. I think even adults should read some of the stories in this book. The poem a child wrote about her father is something every parent should read.I was also impressed with the health advice and section on making the right choices. The positive lessons you can learn from this book will last a lifetime. My favorite poem was on page 293, it truly holds the wisdom of a child. We have so much to learn from children, if we will take the time to listen.~The Rebecca Review
Purchased this for my daughter, age 8. After reading through the first couple of stories I truly feel that it is a bit too old for her age group (though a few storied did bring a tear to MY eye). I think I will hold off another year or two.
I like the way they organize the little stories as they are. The poems touch my heart. I was really moved when the sentences started becoming wonderful feelings that came to me. I especially like the funny, heart-trending "book" poem. I highly reccommend this book for kids who need laughter and parents who want their kids to be cheerful and understand about life.
Chicken Soup for the Kids Soul is a fantastic, well-written book. This book includes many stories about kids going through life. The stories are about love, sorrow, family, achieving dreams and many more. The stories will make kids think of times they went through. It's an inspiring book that will make kids believe in themselves. I would give this book five stars.
