I couldn't put it down. And now that I've finished it, I want more. Going to keep my eyes open for a sequel.Hint: I went to the author biographies in the back of the book first before reading their short stories because I wanted to connect the person with his/her piece.GAZA WRITES BACK includes 23 short stories written by young adults from Gaza, most have never left this tiny enclave because of the suffocating Israeli siege. Their stories are written in English, not translated from Arabic, and tell about the ordinary and extraordinary events of life under Occupation.In their own words, with the clarity of uncensored feelings and dreams, these Palestinians eschewed rockets and stones, and decided to pick up their pens to call for justice.In one, a medical student must go to work in the dangerous tunnels to support his family after Israel kills his father. In another, a student is frustrated when she forgets that there might not be any electricity available that day so she canât print her mid-term exam and turn it in. One writer shares the thoughts of a freedom fighter before he takes his last breath. Another writer gets into the head of a suicide bomber before he blows himself up, along with Israeli soldiers.These young writers are speaking for all Palestinians while sharing their personal stories with the skill of native born English speakers. They challenge the destructive stereotypical thinking that lazy Western audiences have been fed about Palestine and Palestinians.
very good and well written. So glad to hear from the people of Gaza as there is a Media Blackout of the situation. US Media just does not think us hearing about Genocide and Apartheid is important especially since our taxpayer dollars support it!
Heart breaking short stories written by those who have experienced Israel's brutal assault on the Palestinian citizens of Gaza first hand. Each story is better than the last, and not only do these stories give a voice to the voiceless but also give feelings and humanity to the "numbers". Such talented writers, I will be on the look out for more.
