Anthologies are always subject to a few quality variables like the editor and source stories. My issue with them is that often many of the tales do not fit the subject they have been grouped under. So it was a pleasure to find that this collection is relevant and entertaining. There are twelve entries spanning centuries and while I generally have an affinity for tales from the 19th and early 20th centuries all were solid. It was fun entering a fictional Archimedes' mathematical mind as he solves the murder of a large Roman soldier to puzzling out the mystery surrounding a mine in 7th Century Ireland to seeking the conspirators in The Gunpowder Plot to a simmering vengeance stemming from WW1. And lastly, kudos to Mammoth for an improved product as many of their anthologies have been less-than-stellar.
This collection of stories covers quite a lot of history, from ancient times up to the nineteenth century. I was interested in it for, among other things, an early "Gordianus the Finder" story by Steven Saylor (early in Gordianus' life, that is---not written early.)
I bought the book in less than 5 minutes of reading into Tom's story. I actually got interested in it because I am a Steven Saylor fan, but Tom's story was really amazing. Haven't finished the book yet, but hands down it was the best short story I've read in a while.
i love mystery.
This is a really good book not GREAT but Good. I would recomend it to history people. Glad to of read it.
Some of the stories bored me about halfway through. It seemed as if the authors were padding the stories. Ashley's other historical crime anthologies were far superior.
