A Brave Black Regiment: The History Of The Fifty-Fourth Regiment Of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry 1863-1865

In January 1863 the Union War Department authorized the creation of "a special corps" composed of "persons of African descent"—the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, commanded by Col. Robert Gould Shaw. Hundreds of free blacks enlisted. When the 54th Massachusetts spearheaded the suicidal charge against Fort Wagner on July 18, 1863, the regiment was showered with acclaim, but that defining event was not its only illustrious moment. After the devastating repulse at Fort Wagner left all of the unit's ranking officers dead or wounded, Captain Luis F. Emilio (1844–1918) emerged as the 54th's acting commander. A Brave Black Regiment offers an unparalleled, moving, inside view of the entire history of the 54th Massachusetts, from recruitment through disbandment. With a new introduction, rare, previously unpublished photos of Emilio and members of the 54th, the complete regimental roster, and his lengthy appendix concerning Confederate treatment of black prisoners-of-war, this Da Capo Press/Persues Books Group edition is certain to remain definitive for a long time to come.

If you are a fan of history, and the civil war, you will love this book. It is the story of the 54th Mass. (the first official Black Regiment during the civil war) with Col. Robert G. Shaw in command. It is written by one of the Captains that actually served with the 54th, so it explains a lot of detail a normal historian could never find out. If you liked the movie Glory (which was the story of the 54th Mass) I recommend you getting this book.

A very detailed history of the 54th all Black Regiment from Massachusetts as told by Luis Fenollosa Emilio a captain in that regiment. Emilio's father was a Spaniard and Luis was born in New Bedford. After the battle at Fort Wagner he remained one of the highest ranking officers. The book contains a listing of all the participants, wounded, and other outcomes. I also has photographs of many of the participants. A seminal book re the Civil War.

The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry will always have a special place in the pantheon of US/World history. The courageous black men that fought were the ultimate patriots that wanted to defend the United States, forever eradicating slavery, and receive their basic right to citizenship and equal rights. Their combat record was without doubt something to admire and respect. The engagements at Battery Wagner on Morris Island, SC and at Olustee, FL for example, were enough to try the most hardened veteran. This is not your typical regimental history because these were not your typical soldiers at that time. Needless to say, these men faced additional dangers and setbacks white soldiers would never have to worry about. This regimental account by Captain Luis Emilio, whom commanded Company E, tells of the challenges he and the men of the Regiment faced through their muster in federal service. (Feb. 1863-Aug. 1865). His writing style is clear, concise and informative. This book really is the definite source for all the information one would want to have on the 54th. It includes the full regimental roster, maps, pictures, and a section on the treatment of POW's at the hands of the rebels at Charleston Prison. It is truly an honor to own this piece of the American saga. Students of history will find it to be a powerfully unique and fulfilling study of men and how they responded during their country's darkest hour. The valor and sacrifice of these men will never, never, be forgotten.

This book is a wonderful addition to my civil war collection, which has been growing rapidly since I began using . This book and "The Blue Eyed Child of Fortune", have worked together to help me understand the Black Soldiers and their regiments that existed during the Civil War. I particularly like the photos that are included in this book. My Civil War collection is looking mighty fine in my bookcase. Theses books are like brand new books..

Wonderful book about an amazing regiment that God raised up for such a time as this! A must read for Civil War enthusiasts.
