Good to have another good book about naval actions out of Texas waters. This subject has not been covered much, but was very important to the people of Texas. Love the illustrations of ships I read about but not seen before. There was a lot of risk running the blockade and the stories are exciting.
Very informative history about blockade running on the Galveston Coast. Knew about Mobile and the east coast but did notknow there was such an extensive amount of blockade running out of Galveston. Well written and presented strong research.
Another terrific book written by Texas maritime expert Andy Hall. I first met Andy a few years back when I was working on my own book on Galveston and the Civil War. His knowledge is immense and his spirit generous when sharing what he knows. That expertise extends to his research in primary materials as well as his intimate knowledge of the wrecks through his diving and recovery efforts. Apart from being a great introduction to blockade running on the Texas coast, with tales of both intrepid Confederate "runners" and vigilant Union blockaders, this boos excels on two counts that I found particularly impressive: 1) narrative - his explanation of international maritime law and prize courts was really interesting, and the details of some of the financial aspects of blockade running was even more so; 2) illustrations - the maps and drawings made by the author himself are worth the price of this book...absolutely wonderful...a real talent. I highly recommend the author's websites at maritimetexas dot net; and deadconfederates dot com, for my great details on Texas-related shipwrecks and blockade information.
Excellent book.
