This really makes you think about the psychological, emotional, and most importantly, spiritual consequences of our actions. No matter how much time passes, our behaviours have lasting consequences for ourselves, and often for our loved ones as well. While karma is associated with Eastern religion, I believe in it in the sense that the Bible says that you reap what you sow. Time does not make the consequences of sin fade away; we need God's intervention to save us from the temporal and eternal consequences of our sin.
This novel follows the twists and turns of an old womanâs deteriorating mind, so it definitely requires some keeping up. This is an entertaining family drama set in the black community, and the main character, is a study in how racism, sexism, misperceptions and family problems can affect a personâs behavior and self esteem. Her experiences make for a thought-provoking, emotional read, and just like in real life, things donât necessarily end up with the way you might expect them to. This book is a great stand-alone story, but the pieces are definitely in place for an interesting sequel if this author decides to go that route.
This book was too short. About 150 pages. I think the author is cleverly selling her book in parts. It was a change of pace to read a book where a old woman was the main character. Hattie was something else in her day and not too meek in her old age. When her dementia causes her to spill her sinful beans, it causes some havoc within the family. At the end of this small installment there are a lot of unanswered questions. Now that I am invested in the characters I want to know how it all ends so I bought "Unthinkable Sins" part2. If I don't get any readers satisfaction with this next book, I guess I will have to write my own ending!!! I hate when a author does that. I find it a form of conning readers into buying. With that said I however must say the writing voice was impressive!
Interesting short story that leaves more questions than answers forcing one to book 2 Family Secrets I don't know why they didn't just combine the books and sell it together. For that reason alone I gave the book four stars.good plot with twists and turns
I truly am a sucker for historical fiction and when I started this book I wasn't quite sure what to expect but I went in with high hopes. I must say that Ms. Tiffani Quarles-Sanders did not disappoint. The story is centered around the musings of Hattie Durham aka Madea to her sons who is in the later stages of dementia. We are treated to frequent flashbacks of the many things that she did all in the name of love. Of course many of her actions are really misguided and criminal but you can't help but feel a well of empathy swell in your heart for this woman who was mistreated as a child, sold to her husband by her bitter and womanizing father, and then fell in love with an unavailable man. All of these circumstances guided and made her the woman that we see who recounts her memories through a fog of haze and confusion. I think that the author did an exceptional job of painting the picture of the past and affording us the opportunity to feel as if we were in rural Alabama when the events unfolded. I must say that I have to agree with one of the other reviewers that the last 15% of the book did feel a bit rushed as if the author was ready to end the story but all in all this was a pleasant albeit dark at times, read!! Kudos Ms. Quarles-Sanders I'm very pleasantly happy to see that there is a book 2 to the family saga and can't wait to dive right in to see what you have in store for us next.
Hattie experienced so many things but was determined that once experienced love, she wanted it at all cost. So many family secrets to nd the license wanted for her and her boys. Is there more to this story? What will Susan do next? Will the nurses ever disclose what they saw and heard?
I'm not gonna give any plot details about this book, but I will say, check it out for yourself. I got the sample and was immediately hooked! I love to read African American historical fiction about women and their relationships, struggles and triumphs. My favorite books are by J. California Cooper. Tiffany Quarles-Sanders is new to me, but wow what a plot!!! I've already purchased Book 2!!! There were a few typos but you can figure those out. No biggie. I hope 's. Quarrels-Sanders will keep them coming! I'm gonna recommend this one to my sister. We love to share books!
I can't explain how good this book is. I always thought that when ppl go thru dementia that they were just talking crazy but this book made me realize that they're just reliving certain things. And some of those things can blow the lid off of life as we know it! A must read!
