In prose as smooth and easy as the sweet iced tea so favored by its characters, The Pecan Man uses familiar period issues as a backdrop to examine the motives that drive our individual actions. Each character has to face both the selfishness and the selflessness that inform all human behavior, alternating and occasionally evolving, as they navigate the circumstances of their lives. Although set in the South during a volatile period for the Civil Rights movement, this story is more specifically about how we define family and how, as a family, we forgive the failures and flaws, even when they are our own.Having grown up myself in a small southern town in the 70's, so many memories were stirred by the wonderful sensory desriptions of the town of Mayville...the JC Penney store, the soda counter, the homecoming parade, all seem like home. Likewise, the people who populate the town are typical but so richly developed as to not be stereotypical, driving home the point that no matter what you think you might know about a region, an era or an individual, you rarely know the truth.
When I first started reading this I didn't realize that I would finish reading it in one night. I started and before I knew it I was on Chapter 15 and then I was finished. While the author did a wonderful job wrapping it up and tying it in a bow, I wanted more. I thought about Miss Ora Lee all night and I think it was the unexpected twist at the end that did it for me.If you're like me you will start reading and think you know immediately where it is heading, but trust me, Miss Cassie puts enough twists in to keep you going. The plot, the characters and the town, a character in itself, will keep you entertained.
After finishing the book, I was at a loss of words. The story was ingenious, and I never knew what was going to happen next. I felt like all the imperfections in the characters was what made this story wonderful. In the end, all I wanted was more! It's a great read, but before you pick it up, be warned that you won't be able to put it down until you're done.
The Pecan Man is an excellent, captivating story that grabs you and pulls you in from the very first page. I didn't want to put it down once I started reading it. The character development so well done that it was easy to "visualize" them in my head. The dialect of several of the characters is well-done and believable, and adds tremendously to the story line. Great book! I highly recommend it!
I've waited years for this book to come out and I must say it was well worth the wait. I was mezmerized by it and couldn't put it down. The characters and setting are so real that I could picture it all as it unfolded. I was surprised by the twist at the end of the story and I must honestly say that it was an emotional ending that made me cry. I can see this book as a movie and I wish Cassie Selleck much success with it. I do hope she'll publish more in the near future. -Mary Rogers
Cassie did a GREAT job on this book! I couldn't put it down! There were twist & turns that I never expected. When I got to the last chapter - I wanted MORE!!!! Hopefully she will let us know what has happened to the other characters in the book. It brought back so many memories for me. If you read "The Help" & enjoyed it - this book is a must read! I would highly recommend this to all my family & friends! Cassie - SELL IT FOR A MOVIE!!! Cassie - write more books!!! GREAT JOB!!!
I love reading Southern Authors like Eudora Welty and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings because they take me back to the wonderful memories I have of growing up in a small southern town. Cassie Dandridge Selleck's book allowed me to re-kindle (pun intended) my warm recollection of those wonderful wooden floors in Ezell's and parades down main street. However, the Pecan Man also reminded me of the racial disparities that were once prevalent in small town Central Florida. I was encouraged by how the author portrayed Blanche's family. Their steadfast devotion to one another and grace despite circumstances is an example to all. Well Done!
This book was recommended by a friend and she was so right. It is well written, flows nicely and you are unable to put it down once you start. There is no predictability. You just want to see what happens to the characters and what they make of their lives given the circumstances of their lives.
