Deadman's Road by Joe R. Lansdale is a collection of five western/horror stories that deal with the Reverend Jebidiah Mercer--a preacher and gunslinger who's on a mission for God, who seeks out the evil and horror in each town he visits and destroys it with extreme prejudice. Now, when you think of the Reverend Mercer, you need to picture Clint Eastwood in your mind from the movie, Pale Rider, and you'll have a pretty good idea of what the character looks like and his general temperament in stressful situations. The first of the stories in this fun-filled anthology is "Dead in the West," which is a novella and the longest of the five pieces. This story was first written back in 1985 and introduced the Reverend to the world. The other four stories were written at various times during the past twenty years and are reminiscent of the early pulp novels and the early Jonah Hex comic books. These stories are purer, in-your-face entertainment and are filled with the dark, Texas humor that Joe (Hisownself) is famous for, graphic scenes of violence, rich Texas folklore and locations that would give author, Larry McMurtry, a run for his money. The first story begins with the good Reverend Jebidiah Mercer entering the small town of Mud Creek on the eve of the town's retribution. You see, many of the town's citizens took it upon themselves to murder an Indian medicine man and his woman out of nothing more than racist hatred. The Indian placed a curse on the town of Mud Creek and its citizens just before he was lynched. That curse is now coming into play as the Reverend enters the town.

********The Reverend Rides Again And Again And Again And Again******** (8 pages) In the first few pages Lansdale, that’s Joe L. Lansdale. the author of this here book, remember him?, yeah, that guy, in this here introduction he talks about how important watching westerns on the telly was to him back when he was knee-high to a gopher, and a mighty small gopher at that, and how he developed a taste for weird westerns and that type of stuph. Then he transitions into a long rant on his pet peeve about writing. So after giving us an intemperate lecture, with examples, lotsa examples, about how he hates "saidisms" Lansdale's trolley truly goes off the tracks becomes it comes clear that Lansdale is totally blind when it comes to his own fault of the overuse of colloquialisms. A few is good, but too many is too much, and after a while it gets as wearing on the nerves as six squalling children who've just seen an ice cream truck miss their stop on a hot sunny day, and who’ve found that their parent won’t chase after it. And besides, your change purse is shut tighter than a frog's anus in a thunderstorm, and they ain't gonna get that sweet trip to their icy Nirvana nohow. So when the Right Reverend Lansdale does get on his high horse and gives us a righteous lecture on writing it would do him wonders to get his getalong over to one of those bright and shiny pieces of glasswork and take a look at his ownself, who is one literature’s worst offenders of sech things. Methinks the author protesteth too mucheth. But that's all neither here nor there because after much hysterical hand waving, and just as much huffing and puffing, he kinda ends his introduction, wanders off to get a sandwich and forgets to come back.
