No book has ever changed my life the way this one has. I am a lover of logic and philosophy, and this book gave the Michael Philips of my heart an ocean to swim through. Although this was for college, I will never lose, forget, or remove it from my bookshelf, unless I am reading through it again. It is filled past the brim with insight of some of the greatest philosophers. It makes ample discussion when trying to impress friends and colleagues, and changes your very frame of mind in which you see everything.
This is one of the few textbooks I have ever been required to purchase that I actually enjoy reading. There are typically both sides of any given argument right next to each other in the book. Following each side of the argument are questions that help you understand your own thoughts on the subject matter, rather than try to guide you down one path or the other.
If you're into Philosophy I'm sure this book will serve you well. It was required for the Philosophy course I'm taking in college. It's not the easiest to understand and I found myself re-reading a lot of the material to truly grasp what some of the older Philosopher's (Plato, Kant, Mill, Hume) are trying to say or not to say! There is some more current ones in there from the 20th century, which are easier to follow. Like I said, you have to be into Philosophy to like this book, it's not a lay mans book, but not super advanced either. Try at your own risk, Philosophy just isn't my thing.....
I needed this book for a college course, and overall it served it's purpose well. I enjoyed the content on a personal level, but it probably would not be my first choice if I was looking to buy a book on philosophy for personal reading.
This tome offers a plethora of varied perspectives on the main philosophical issues explored through the ages. Overall it presents most views on each topic, with the editor adding his own view in the mix on occasion.
So far I have read several segments of this book, and it is easy to follow. The book provides information about the background before reading a piece. I have enjoyed this textbook so far.
Definitely a must have for any philosophy enthusiasts. Has works ofmany greats like Socrates and Plato. Any I had to buy it for college butwas a pleasure to learn!
This book is actually good. I had to order it for my philosophy class. I didn't expect to like anything about it, but there are a few good philosophical arguments.
