Introduction To Philosophy: Classical And Contemporary Readings

Introduction to Philosophy: Classical and Contemporary Readings, Sixth Edition, is the most comprehensive topically organized collection of classical and contemporary philosophy available. The text includes sections on God and evil, knowledge and reality, the philosophy of science, the mind/body problem, freedom of will, consciousness, ethics, political philosophy, existential issues, and philosophical puzzles and paradoxes.Easy to use for both students and instructors alike, the book incorporates boldfaced key terms (listed after each reading and defined in the glossary); a guide to writing philosophy papers; and a "Logical Toolkit". The sixth edition includes five new readings--by renowned contemporary philosophers Anthony Brueckner, John Martin Fischer, Alan Goldman, Rosalind Hursthouse, and Thomas Nagel--and additional descriptive material on the authors throughout the book. An updated Instructor's Resource CD includes a test bank of exam questions, sample syllabi, summaries of each reading, and additional pedagogical tools. A Companion Website at www.oup.com/us/perry features the same material included on the CD and also links to a separate site for students, which offers multiple-choice self-quizzes; pedagogical material; and an interactive blog featuring recommended websites, news articles, helpful anecdotes, and interviews.

This textbook was in pretty good condition, with no handwriting or other conditional flaws. The text itself, though, might instead be called "Introduction to Contemporary Anglo-American Philosophy" instead of the misleading "Introduction to Philosophy." Apart from the obligatory excerpts from Plato and Aristotle, the majority of the selections come from American or English philosophers in the Analytic tradition, most of which were written within the last 50 years or so. If this were people's first and only introduction to the diverse discipline of philosophy (which very well may be the case), then it seems to me that many people are missing out.

Used this for my Intro to Philosophy class. Though at times challenging, I enjoyed the collection of readings and the way in which they were presented. Philosophy is not my major, but with the help of this textbook, was presented in a way that was engaging and as clear as Philosophy could be.

I got a teacher's manual, which is basically the same book...except you can't sell it back to anyone because it says its a teacher's manual and nonreturnable.

Bought this for one of my classes. It was required due to the fact that my professor was a contributor and made it easy to discuss if we had the book. Overall, it's easy to follow through, but since philosophy isn't for me, I would not read it again.

Exactly what I needed for my Philosophy class.

This was a required text for my honors philosophy course. You can find all of the pieces in the textbook online for free. Save yourself the trouble, honestly.

I needed this for Intro to Philosophy for school. I bought it used from - an almost perfect copy. Now I need to return it as this particular volume will give the user an A+.

Most of the works in the book can be found online since they are so old. You can probably succeed in an Intro to Philosophy course without purchasing this book.
