Note: These opinions are my own; however, I was provided an advanced copy in exchange for an honest and timely review.Following The Queen’s Poisoner, Jeff Wheeler continues his powerful Kingsfountain tale in The Thief’s Daughter. The timeline has shifted 9 years later, and Owen and Evie are again front and center, bound by their loyalty to King Sevem. I don’t like to spoil the story for readers with a summary, so I will leave my impressions instead. The world of the Kingfountain trilogy is full intrigue, full of ancient buried cities and plotting kingdoms. The plot moves quickly and is so wonderfully multi-faceted that the reader is enthralled by every thread, wanting to unravel the truth behind each mystery. With this installment, the reader is carried to many more lands—expanding the appreciation for the geography and people inhabiting those lands. Wheeler fleshes out the current and historical conflicts in across the world. Evie and Owen are in their late teens, each exhibiting the skills and knowledge of privileged learning, as well as the yearnings and anxieties of those teenage years. We also begin to unravel some the deeper secrets of Kingfountain around the former queen as well as King Sevem. With all characters and subplots, the reader is greeted with conflicting surprises. I was impressed how we can appreciate the perspective of each character.Be warned though, this story is a heart wrencher; Wheeler describes his own trouble with telling the story at the end of the book. Interestingly, it is not just main characters for whom you feel a sense of loss, but several of the second tier characters. The cliff hangers leave you with a million ideas on how the story might continue in volume 3.
