There are so many books on therapy that reiterate old ideas or advance faddish approaches: this is NOT one of them. The authors develop a new way of assisting clients in overcoming problems in their lives using insights from social construction. The approach is respectful, optimistic, and culturally sensitive. This book is a wonderful antidote to therapist burn-out.
I think it's helpful for those who want to study narrative therapy. The part one in this book is good for someone not familiar with narrative therapy, and the part two is just useful for someone who is in the practice of narrative therapy. I think everyone who like narrative therapy must not miss this book!
I got this for my Master's Project for graduate school. The book itself is incredibly helpful. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because the Kindle version is a little messed up. In my experience Kindle usually provides actual page numbers as well as location, but for some reason this book doesn't have it. This isn't a problem if you are simply reading it for fun, but if you plan on citing your sources, you are a little screwed.
As a counseling student gearing up to consider practicum, understanding one's theoretical orientation is extremely important. Narrative Therapy is comparatively new, complex in underlying theory, and confusing to understand. I was able to take a class in the approach, and this was one of our required readings.It is superb at breaking down the complex theory into manageable parts, and is able to provide a solid, comprehensible, (almost) systemic means of looking at Narrative therapy from meeting the client to (what in narrative passes for) termination. While it may not be quite enough to stand on its own as a one-text stop (some things are not explicitly identified in the text or glossary), it is definitely worth having on the shelf if you intend to use or familiarize yourself with narrative therapy.
This book was required for a Narrative Therapy class I'm taking. It is well written with lots of examples from practice, ranging from child therapy to women with anorexia to community work.
