The Trumpet Of Conscience (King Legacy)

In November and December 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered five lectures for the renowned Massey Lecture Series of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Immediately released under the title Conscience for Change after King’s assassination, it was republished as The Trumpet of Conscience. Each oration speaks prophetically to today’s perils, addressing issues of equality, conscience and war, the mobilization of young people, and nonviolence. The book concludes with “A Christmas Sermon on Peace,” a powerful lecture about nonviolence as a path to world peace that was broadcast live from Ebenezer Baptist Church on Christmas Eve in 1967.

There are some volumes of literature one simply MUST have in your personal library...this is one.In fact, it is a reader that one should have alongside your bed or sitting place - for ease of reference.A volume of hope, penetrating insight, perseverance, and a source of inspiration for the everyday...especially in times like these.

The last chapter in this short book is worth the price -- Dr. King's 1967 Christmas sermon. It is an incisive analysis of the situation confronting America near the end of his life -- and a imperative statement that moral ends (justice, freedom, liberty, equality) can only be attained through fully moral means (nonviolence, love). His view is in no way naive -- he knows the path he points to will be a hard one -- much harder than he at first hoped. But he is insistent that moral methods are the only way to achieve a righteous society that will bless all mankind.

If you think you know Martin Luther King Jr. you probably don't. Martin Luther King Jr. was calling people to revolution.

I chose this rating because the book is all that I expected it to be. A splendid read for me.
