Before I've read this book I wasn't even completely aware that the Aztecs were divided in two big and opposed alliances - the Aztec Empire of the Triple Alliance and Aztec-Toltec Chichimec Alliance. In several books there is almost a complete correspondence between Aztecs and the Mexica from Tenochtitlán...obviously the Mexica were Aztecs, but not all Aztecs were Mexica. In this extraordinary introduction you will learn how politically complex was that region; the palatial intrigues and court intrigues had nothing to learn from their European counterparts! You'll also find how the Mexica ascended; although they were late comers to the Mexican basin they ruthlessly became the leaders of the Triple alliance. You will learn amazing details regarding the social and military structure of those civilizations, including how many prisoners you had to capture to raise through the several ranks, which weapons were preferred by the Mexica, the Tlaxcalans or the Mixtecs. Which tactics did they use; their main generals and also some campaigns are summarized.Very good color plates by Angus McBride which illustrates marvelously some elements of those colorful armies.
