This book could be subtitled: "Anything You Ever Wanted to Know about Isis, But Didn't Know Where to Find it..." There's a LOT of information here, from clothing and divination to mythology and history. The information is presented in an interesting and quite readable manner and there are tons of illustrations. If you have believed that Isis was solely an Egyptian Goddess, Goddess of Love and the Great Mother, this book will set you straight, showing you Isis as Goddess of Healing and Magick, Sun and Moon Goddess, Goddess of the Stars and Earth and much more. She is associated with Gods and Goddesses of Scandinavian, Roman, Celtic, Greek and Asian pantheons. I highly recommend this book for the student, worshipper and researcher of Isis.
In my reviews I tend to criticize Llewellyn, but publishing this book is one of their better moves recently.DeTraci Regula knows a lot about her subject, and the book is thoughtfully and beautifully written. There's a lot of information presented here, and it's presented in a clear and direct manner. She teaches well, but avoids being didactic. The various aspects of Isis are examined in a very readable fashion, and many excellent exercises, prayers, and rituals are included. This is a book of great depth, and the more time you spend with it, the more you will get out of it. I am rereading it now and I am astonished at how much I missed the first time around. One of the things I enjoyed most about this book is Ms. Regula's writing style. She seems to invite you into the book and walk with you through the chapters; it is almost as if you were visiting a temple of Isis and she was your guide and tutor. She has a lot to say and she says it with grace and warmth.I would recommend this book very highly, both to those who are already acquainted with the Goddess of 10,000 Names and to those who are simply seeking information about The Lady of Words of Power and her worship as it continues today.
It is difficult to review this book. It is excellent and a must for everyone who - for whatever reasons - is fascinated by the figure of Isis. Since I am one of them I just had to recommend it. But, to be fair, there are aspects I miss in this book. For me, an important aspect of Isis is her role as a fighter against evil. The central myth about Isis describes her fight against the evil Set, who not only commits the cut-up murder of Osiris but even molest the child Horus. In both these cases Isis intervenes and saves Osiris as well as defend Horus. Unfortunately the book somewhat downplays these aspects of Isis. This probably has something to do with the fact that the book partly is inspired by New Age philosophy, which is often quite non-dualistic in its worldview. But, on the other hand, it is a quite encyclopaedic work, where the reader will get information about a lot of aspects of the Goddess. And it has many wonderful pictures... So in spite of the fact that I miss an emphasis on those aspects of Isis that is quite important for me I really enjoyed this book. I can very much recommend it.
I absolutely adore this book! It is basically a handbook for Egyptian devotees who have an affinity for Isis as the great Mother. It is well researched but not too scholarly or longwinded like most books on the subject.Within are charming rituals, recipies for making natron(special bath),ritual tools, how to make a shrine to Isis, healing rites, dinner recipies, virtually everything under the sun about this multi purpose diety! It is all done with great love and devotion to Isis.It is true there is not much else about the other gods of Egypt but it says right on the cover-Mysteries of Isis! This is all about the great mother, who faithfully answers most cries. I cannot think of any other goddess who was so revered in popular Western society since Roman times. Maybe the virgin Mary? who is really an emanation of Isis. I remember being in Paris at the old Roman site of her temple, now a Christian church. Her presence was still very strong! It is easy to see how this goddess is so accesible to many, pagan or otherwise. She is truely the springtime of the human heart! Also within is the first incarnation of the scarab oracle. This is a very special connection to the mother for those who cannot hear her soft voice already...
