I love this book because Babaji Kindler really breaks down the symbolism of the Goddess Kali. I fully intend to buy his other books in the Sword of the Goddess series. To me, Hindu deities have always been mysterious and unfathomable to the western mind because no one took the time to explain why they stood in such particular poses with their hands in particular mudras (positions) holding particular items, etc. One had to read all the classic Indian literature to discover their stories, and many times these books have been poorly translated into English. In Twenty-four Aspects of Mother Kali, Babaji Kindler really helps the reader focus on every single aspect of the Divine Kali from the base of her feet right to the top of her crown and beyond. Each symbol that is included in the traditional images of Kali is defined and described in such detail that I find myself reading a single chapter and then having to put the book aside so I can really absorb he deep meaning of what I have just read. The writing itself is excellent and polished and makes me want to keep reading. The book is geared toward western understanding. It comes with a glossary of Hindu terms in the back in case the reader is unfamiliar with a term that is not fully defined in the text. It is interspersed with appropriate quotations from poets writing about the Mother Kali.Even if one does not wish to worship the Divine Goddess, this book is vastly useful to western students of Indian religious culture. If one does choose to worship the Goddess Kali, then this book will definitely bring you closer to her, allowing you to focus on one aspect at a time and really get to know her full story as the Divine Mother of the Universe.
Twenty-Four Aspects of Mother Kali"Twenty-Four Aspects of Mother Kali" is an outstanding work from someone who seems to have personally "experienced" the Universal Mother. This book contains the essence of many of the ancient texts on Shakti/Kali worship in India. The author reveals the hidden meaning behind the imagery and metaphor of the popular Hindu Goddess while describing many of dimensions of the Mother simply and directly thus exposing us to the core of Mother Kali worship. This book is useful on three levels:1. It provides basic appreciation level information to the casual or curious reader.2. To a beginner devotee it provides meaning behind some of the symbols associated with the Universal Mother.3. To a practicing devotee it provides food for contemplation and inspiration."Twenty-Four Aspects of Mother Kali" is an invaluable resource for those who do not understand Sanskrit or any other Indian language translation of Indian scriptures on the subject.
Goddess Kali has been part of the Indian religious tradition for thousands of years. She is mentioned in the ancient books. In the last 2000 years, the famous worshippers of Goddess Kali are the great poet Kalidasa, and the saints of Ramakrishna Ashram. Goddess Kali is benevolent as well as fierce. The State of West Bengal and her big city Kalicut (Calcutta) are well-known for Kali worship, even though all of Asia worships Her. This book is written so well it is accessible to Westerners. The symbolism of the many aspects of the Goddess is explained very well. Great author.
This is a fine intro for anyone interested in getting to know this Goddess better. Straightforward, easy to grasp........which is something many other books on this subject fail to do. We are not all scholars who want to read an academic treatise. So here is a great little book that talks about the Goddess Herself in all her aspects. The author goes into great detail on the symbolism we see on most depictions of Her which appear frightful and give the impression of a power which will do us harm rather than embrace us. All is dispelled after a read through and the reader gets to know Kali in all her wonderful........and powerful charm. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand Kali on a basic level. A wonderful place to start, right here. I've used this book as a "go back to" guide many times as I've explored my own connection to the Divine.
From page one through the summary, this well written guide to understanding the 24 Cosmic Principles will no doubt create the need for the reader to continue this experience. This pursuit will bring about a deeper appreciation for the complex and yet Divine Mother.
This book was like experiencing the clarity of putting on seeing eye glasses after stumbling about in a dim lite library for 42 years searching for answers on how to heal after losing ones mother at the age of 7....Layers of confusion and suffering revisited during this injection of healing philosophy has clearified up reality of death in relativity by illuminating wisdom truth....I have a mother and her name is Kali!!.....:)
As someone who has searched long and hard for books on Hinduism and Kali that are legitimate, well-written, and not shallow fluff, I have to say this book is one of my favorites. It's well worth re-reading and it's lead me to look into Babaji Bob Kindler's teachings even more.
