The older, fourth edition, is SOOOOO much better than this new one; older had a great introductory chapter on the different variety of biologic compounds (e.g., lipids, carbs, nucleic acids, etc.) that was a such a great review/introduction to biochemistry, that chapter's now gone and the different compounds are instead discussed in their dedicated chapters (e.g., the structure and definition of carbs are introduced in the chapter on carbohydrate metabolism, etc.), which might be fine if all the intervening chapters didn't constantly reference those compounds, which leaves the reader jumping around ("wait, what was the difference between a proteoclycan and a glycoprotein? Lemme flip around through 70 pages to hunt for it..." Also, the fourth edition had WAY more little clinical connection side notes, the newer edition dropped most of them and replaced them with only three or four HUGE multi-paragraph clinical connections, which have multiple examples crammed into each, without any specificity overall. For some reason this new edition opens with a chapter on carb metabolism, then goes into introductory proteins and nucleic acids, DNA synthesis, etc., THEN resumes metabolism of lipids, proteins, etc....the fourth edition has all the metabolism chapters grouped together which made so much more sense...
