I wish I had read the reviews on before purchasing. I am taking my MTEL today (March 7 2009) and I've read the book through... the authors and editors should be embarrassed by it. Not only are there many grammatical, typographical and factual errors, but at many points, apparently when she was tired of writing, the author resorts to simply listing words that might be important..with no explanation! Not only that, but it smacks of xenophobia and racism. A whole unit on WWII with not a single mention of death camps, holocaust, Jews, nothing? A sub unit describing the benefits of the Christians crusades but describing the early Moslem's as if they were death-mongers? DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! It will do you more harm than good.
This is one of the few study guides available to prepare for the History (06) MTEL, so you may well have to suck it up and buy it anyway, but be warned that though it covers in one way or another all of the competencies, it also has its fair share of mistakes. For example, it says that Maryland was an Atlantic Colony on one page, and then states it was a Southern Colony on the next page. Also, it might be the most dry retelling of history known to mankind, but then again, the MTEL IS a standardized test.Buy it because you have to, but supplement it, if you can, with other texts. I am also using a flash card system from MTEL Exam Secrets Test Prep that I also bought on that helps to reinforce the information, and to weed out errors in the book.Good luck studying!
The subsection summaries in this "review" book are deplorable. I believe they must have been written by a high school student, so frequent are the grammatical mistakes and awkward (or irrelevant) statements. I do not trust this book, or the emphasis it places on certain historical events or people. I do not recommend this as a study guide.
There were several incorrect answers in the practice test and a few factual mistakes. Any attempt to contact the company was unsuccessful. It is poorly written and the grammer is atrocious.
Don't buy this book. It has so many mistakes in it that the publisher should recall it. Typos, incorrect dates, factual errors, pathetic grammar -- this book has it all. I have the test on July 11 but I am bringing the book back today because I am afraid studying it will make me fail.
You have no choice since this is the only History MTEL book out there, but there are so many mistakes. It looks like they didn't proof read this at all. The answer guide to the practice test has a bunch of typo's. Some are easy to catch and some take a while. Here is an easy example of one of the many typo's in the book: #64: The holy book of Islam is: A. The Bible B. The Kaaba C. The Koran D. The Torah. Answer: B. The Koran.Also there is only one practice test.
