I wanted a good book to review for the national registry paramedic exam. I bought 5 different books but this one was the best. I passed the test the first time.
This text was an excellent review of what I see working as a paramedic in an urban setting in New Jersey. I utilized it for review of the NREMT-P which I had let lapse several years ago (bad idea on my part). What I noticed, however, was the actual questions on the test were different compared to the type of questions presented in this book. I went through every chapter in this book and completed both CD tests as well and scored in the mid 90% each time. The NREMT exam asked questions relating to very specific OB-GYN, MCI, Trauma and medication classifications that I didn't see in this text. My advice to the Medic/Medic student is utilize this book and regarding the areas of care that are not commonly seen in your service region and expand on those with other quality resources. I passed first time at 80 questions so I am not complaining. Excellent text...utilize to identify weak areas and then expand on each area beyond this text. Good luck!
I used this book about 1 week before my NREMT-P test. The book is divided into sections as is registry. I passed the first time. No book can simulate national registry due to the the computer test adjusting to your answers, but this book helped me prepare. I would encourage this purchase
The book was revised in 2008 shortly after the implimentation of the CAT (Computer Adaptive Testing). I like the format of the book, it has tests for each section of the test (Airway, Cardiology, etc). The problem is that in the field of Paramedicine treatments change rapidly as new research improves the quality of care, especially in the area of cardiology. That being said a lot of the drug doses and sequences in the cardiology section are no longer correct. You can still learn a lot from this book, just do not take the answers as Gospel, instead use the questions and go find the right answers. The explanation of the Computer Adaptive Test Process in the beginning of the book is great, it really lays out the process and makes it crystal clear.
This was the only resource I used to study for the exam, and for most of the questions there were really good explanations. Although, some of the cardiology questions were not up to date with the newest ACLS guidelines.
The book gave some new questions that I had not come across yet in other study guides which was great but the info was outdated as far as ACLS and they used the same questions from the quizzes to write all three practice tests as well so it was redundant. It would have been great if there were new questions to be asked after studying from the quizzes to see if there was learning done, not just memorization of the question with the answer after seeing it once, which is what happens in this case. I did enjoy how it went into a little bit of the mindset of the test better than other study guides. Considering it is cheap it is worth it just for the other questions and study help.
I bought this book because it was recommended to me from another paramedic that I know. I went through the questions and at the end of each section is an answer key. Not only does it tell you the correct answer and why it's correct, it tells you why all the other answers aren't correct or aren't the best fit answer to the question. Really gets you in the right state of mind for the test! Couldn't think of a better study guide. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
Picked this up at Barnes and Noble to study for Florida's state test and possibly re-certifying my national registry certification. The main problems I noted were excessively numerous typos (an egregious example is mistakenly stating Cushing's Syndrome instead of Cushing's reflex as the correct answer to question 17 on Pg. 137), an out of date question on bleeding control (did not go straight from direct pressure to a tourniquet as the national registry does now), and I sincerely hope the cardiology portion is outdated (particularly the question where you are supposed to perform vagal maneuvers on a Pt in their 20's with obvious sinus tach following exertion). I was thoroughly underwhelmed.
