The Buoy Projects: A Story Of Breast Cancer, Bucket-Lists, Life Lessons, Facebook And Love

Wanda Stairs Howard was many things to many people, but first and foremost, she was a mother, grandmother, and wife. Her daughter Lorna’s book is an account of how Wanda took what was left of her life and squeezed it until the pips squeaked, how she and her tireless Team Wanda celebrated her life whilst she was still living it, and how eventually they set her free for the ultimate journey. This book was written because so many people responded so strongly to her story as it played out through the medium of Facebook, and many of those people asked Lorna to put her mother’s story into print so that she could inspire others who weren’t lucky enough to know her personally. By the end of the book, I hope that readers will feel like they knew Wanda and that many will take comfort and inspiration from her life and death.

This book is a journey through a blessed life. The conversational way it is written, truly makes the reader feel that they traveled this journey with "Team Wanda".Having recently lost a dear relative to lung cancer, many of the pages were especially poignant and achingly familiar to me. The obvious zest for life that Wanda had, shone a new light on those parallel memories, lending new perspective to the progression between life and death; blurring the lines so that we are encouraged to celebrate all of life's passages. Thank you for sharing your mom with us, Lorna.

The Buoy Project by Lorna J. Brunelle is a gift and treasure that I did not want to put down once I started reading it. Through a mutual friend I became a friend of the author and her mother through Facebook. With such dignity and meaning I like many others felt honored as Lorna, Wanda and Team Wanda shared so personally the last days and weeks of a very courageous woman's life. That's when I met Wanda. With my own mothers passing last year as I sat at her bedside and just before her last breath said the very words that Lorna and the Team had expressed to Wanda, they truly inspired me . It was so powerful to see how Wanda faced death was such life and how her family reflected that back to her. This book is so very inspiring, highly creative and a must read for everyone. For it is a story of life, joy and death, something we all share and can experience with such vitality, grace and courage like Wanda shows us. This book is a blessing to all who read it.Anne Deidre

A celebration of a life well lived. Death, our enemy, gets no credit whatsoever. LIfe is eternal and Wanda clearly knew where her true home is. Lorna Brunelle paints a portrait of her Mum which reflects her epic attitude of love, hope and forgiveness. Wanda's faith and courage as well as her open and giving perspective is both admirable and inspiring. A wonderful read for anyone on this imperfect earthly journey.

“The Buoy Projects” is about death, but only in a small, transitory way. It is mostly the story about life, of living, of a remarkable woman whose diminutive size, nor her disease, could contain the boundless spirit within her. The story is told in a straightforward yet compelling way, clear and concise, imbued with memories we can all recognize and share. It is the story of a quintessential Italian mother and grandmother whose lasting spirit embodies the expression, “You never know how strong you are until strength is your only option.” In death there is life, and “The Buoy Projects” embraces every loving bit of it.

This is a page turner.... just couldn't put it down! If you liked Tuesdays with Morrie, you will love this! The author made me feel like I was part of Wanda's "epic" journey as she transitioned for the life hereafter. Her story reminds us of the importance of family, love, charity, and dignity, while not holding back on adventure with lots of belly aching laughter sprinkled in the mix. Truly a joyful, inspirational read!

I read this book in two days and was sad when it ended. Wanda's love for her daughters is a true example of how a mom should be...she taught them to love and respect everyone equally. Her journey throughout her illness is captured perfectly throughout the book. I admired her strength, humor and desire to make each day count. I only hope that when my time comes, I can find the courage and faith as elegantly as her. A must read for everyone.

The Buoy Projects is such a good read, I couldn't put it down. I wish that everyone could have the same enthusiasm for life as Wanda did. She faced life with such zest and death so valiantly. I found myself laughing and crying all in the same chapter. She was truly a blessing to all who knew her. I think anyone facing the end of their life, or anyone who knows someone who is, would truly benefit from reading this book. Truly inspirational. Lorna has done an amazing job of telling her moms story.

My sister enjoyed her vacation's quiet time reading Lorna Brunelle's "The Buoy Projects". She was so pleased that I gave her this book and "Dirty Bomb Shell" by Lorna Brunelle. I was told that being a cancer survivor herself, that she identified with what Lorna and her family went through in so many levels. She loved them both. Thank you Lorna!
