Great book with emotional insight of fighters and how they deal with the big blow of life. It was easy to read in that you did not get confused or lost with the story, but it is an emotionally charged book. Prepare to choke up a bit.
Confession time: I'm the Melanie whom Patti drove to St. Louis to see, and I also met Kim during my time in the sorority. I didn't know 75% of the people or events mentioned in this book, to my regret. During my first reading, I felt almost hostile: Who were these people? When did this happen? Why didn't I know about this? I even thought I recognized my wedding as the one Patti felt uneasy about during the section about choosing to be postive in the short time we have. Everyone projects their own insecurities, and after the second and third readings, I came to realize that I was angry with myself for allowing my own fear to limit my interactions with Patti. Sure, I had the excuses of distance, a young son and a full-time job, but the truth was that it was easier to pretend that I had been supportive and loving when I was truly just shielding myself. I encourage everyone to take a hard look at what it means to be "supportive". I wish I had.
This book is an amazing story about the four women authors on their journey with breast cancer, God, family, and friends. I feel so much more enlightened and comfortable with the topic of breast cancer; I've grown tremendously from my experience reading the book. One of the mantra's for one of the authors is Live, Love, Laugh. My mantra has always been Live, Love, Laugh, Learn. I Learned a great deal from this book and believe it will help others Learn about friendship and one very important part of life no one can escape. Of course, there is a huge emphasis in the book on Living, Loving and Laughing. I gave a copy of this book to approximately 100 friends across the nation. I hope this story will help many people Learn more about their family and friends who are, or who will inevitably, Live, Love, and Laugh their way through breast cancer. My Live, Love, Laugh, Learn Campaign - "PASS IT ON!" I ask that anyone who reads this review to read this book. Then purchase several copies for others. Many people will better understand this life experience. If everyone simply buys two books and asks the people with whom they share the book to "pass it on," the number of people we can reach is incredible.
You cannot help but be moved by these amazing ladies stories. Well written and easy to read...very inspirational. I would recommend this book as a must to newly diagnosed and those wishing to increase their awareness.
As others have mentioned, I read the review in People magazine and picked up the book the next day. The approach taken by the authors is a great approach with each woman sharing her experience on the journey. I would recommend this book to any woman I know (and have). But if I were to give it as a gift, I'd include a package of tissues alongside!
I had the pleasure of meeting Kim at a Komen event where she was the keynote speaker. I of course bought the book after her talk.Nodies at Noon is a very honest account of breast cancer in young women. The four women each write their experiences on several poignant topics. While some issues are universal to all women going through the breast cancer experience, this book highlights certain issues unique to young women. Child birth and motherhood are two examples. The book is bittersweet with one of the authors losing their battle with the disease, and one giving birth to a second child. Like Kim herself, the book is warm and thoughtful.I would recommend it to anyone going through breast cancer or supporters of breast cancer patients.
This is a highly personal, readable recounting of the experience of these four young women with cancer. Most stories about dealing with breast cancer are geared toward women over 50 and how their lives are affected, but this story represents a different perspective. These women aren't facing menopause and retirement, they are looking forward to weddings and babies and getting their careers moving. This is a must read for young women especially.
I bought this book because the four authors are from Kansas City and I am really glad I did! I enjoyed reading their courageous stories and it was a real eye-opener about living with cancer and the toll the treatments took on their bodies. Their stories were a real-life account of what living with cancer is like. The book was a little repetitive at times, but overall very well written. Highly recommended!
