About 10 years ago, I was sitting in an Irregular Warfare planning meeting focused on improving military and government intelligence. Lt. General Flynn was piped in through video conference, and he shared from his location in the Middle East a new plan called Fixing Intelligence. It resonated well with all of us Intelligence staff. We got it. It was a no-brainer. Now he needed to sell it to the rest of the military.Today, Flynn is continuing the fight. He knew how to fix intelligence but had to fix something else first--Perspective. In his book, The Field of Fight, Lt. General Flynn lays out what he believes is required to win a war against Radical Islam and its Allies. This book is not about bashing Islam or anyone that “hawks” may point fingers at. It is directed to those, and the movements that support, killings and mutilations of those who have differing beliefs—and those who support, supply, and sustain such heinous acts.First of all, this book is not a fear mongering right-wing play book about hate, political incorrectness, and far-reaching conspiracies. I, like Flynn come from the Intelligence Community. I agree with the items that he presents as being real threats to national security and global stability based on what I know and have seen as an intelligence advisor and as a regional expert in many topics he covers. This isn’t an us vs. them view, it is a sharing of what is going on around us from the groups committing or inspiring atrocities (Paris, Syria, Orlando, etc.) to our own internal vulnerabilities intensified by politicians, bureaucracy, bottle necks and stovepipes, that will weaken our strategy and our ability to respond now and in the future without change.

Thank you LTG Flynn and Dr. Ledeen for writing this book. It should be required reading for all policy advisors. The threat is real. Our will to win is not. At least not under the present administration. Our boarders are open. We are bringing Muslim “refugees” into our country and even if only a small number are sleepers we are putting ourselves in great danger. The obvious connection between Narco-Terrorists and Islamic terrorists is so obvious yet the present administration is ignoring it. Or worse.In the mid 80’s I worked with an Afghan group. It was a different time and we were fighting a different enemy but I did have the opportunity to meet and work with some of the Mujahedeen. At that time I was considered a “friend” but even at that I was aware of the goals of some of their leaders. It was not only to throw the Russians out of their country even then it was the imposition of Sharia law. They were always polite and outwardly respectful but I could feel the undercurrent. The one that stands out in my mind as an exception was Haji Abdul Latif “the Lion of Kandahar” a devout Muslim and a friend of the US, these two things are not mutually exclusive, I understand he was later killed by the Taliban. You are correct, General Flynn, when you say we must have the people like Latif on our team. The one thing I did learn was their respect for power. Their weapon was their prized possession and they always showed it to impress you (I do not know if this is true today but remember we were friends and allies). If you want their respect they must believe you have the will to fight and win.One of the big Ahaaa’s from the book was the quote from Khomeini “…….I say let the land burn. I say let it go up in smoke, provided Islam emerges triumphant in the rest of the world.
