A Modern Witch: A Modern Witch, Book 1

Can you live 28 years without discovering you're a witch? Lauren is downtown Chicago's youngest elite realtor. She's also a witch. She must be - the fetching spell for Witches' Chat isn't supposed to make mistakes. So says the woman who coded the spell, at least. The tall, dark, and handsome guy sent to assess her is a witch too (and no, that doesn't end the way you might think). What he finds in Lauren will change lives, mess with a perfectly good career, and require lots of ice cream therapy. A Modern Witch is a full-length novel, 81,000 words. The next two books in the series, A Hidden Witch and A Reckless Witch, are coming soon to audio. >Debora Geary is working on several more audiobooks expected out in 2012, if the kids don't spill any more water on her laptop.

Debora Geary just keeps growing as a story teller.Yes, there are witches but this is a story about love, luck, and family. The smooth blending of technology and witchcraft works so well, I was looking for the spellcode in my own machine before the book was over. The cast of characters from Lauren - reluctant witch and ace real estate broker - to Jamie and Nat to the herd of kids and witchlings stole my heart and made me smile. If you like your contemporary fantasy with just a touch of magic, an off center love story, and gorgeously developed characters, you should grab a sample of this one faster than you can say "So mote it be."

A Modern WitchI was looking for a good weekend read, and boy this novel sure fit the bill. This is a story of a modern day witch who doesn't have any clue that she possesses any type of special powers let alone actually being a witch. With a tad bit of intervention by some very special people Lauren will learn a lot more about herself and a new appreciation of who she is really supposed to be. Debora Geary did a wonderful job introducing the characters for this series, each person has an important roll and the blue prints for the tale are laid out in such a way that you become completely invested in all the characters and their lives. I absolutely fell in love with Aervyn the 4 yr old up and coming witch and can not wait to see how he grows up in the series. There is laughter and tears and of course some romance that comes from an unexpected couple. I can not wait to read the next installment! This E-Book was a unexpected gem and was very reasonably priced. I am so glad I took a chance and bought it. If you are looking for a great story, with characters that you fall in love with, LOOK no further, as this is just that book! My only real complaints are that the next book in the series isn't out yet, and there could have been a bit more bulk to this book so I could have kept reading a little longer. I gave this 5 stars because it was everything I was looking for to read.

I really wanted to like this book, but I feel like I just wasted several hours for nothing. The characters all speak with the same voice, and use language that would be laughable in real life. I never want to hear the words witchling, brother mine, son of mine, my heart sings, cripes (and by the way, what 28 year old girl EVER uses the word 'cripes' repeatedly?), etc. ever again. All characters, from age 28 to the grandmothers, sound the same and they all sound ridiculous. The entire book is syrupy sweet to the point of being nauseating (at least for me). None of the characters have any personality flaws, everyone loves each other and gets along fantastically, and they're all super successful and have plenty of money. There are no obstacles in the barely-there plot, so the book just hums along on a road to nowhere. I kept waiting for something, *anything* to happen, but it doesn't. I won't spoil the ending, but of course it just ends with even more happiness, sweetness, and love.I tried to give the author the benefit of the doubt, so I thought this book may just be setting up a really good story for the next book, but then the next book in the series covers some other characters, so now I'm baffled. The book also contains numerous sections where you have to read dialog from a witch chat room, which just magnifies the fact that all the characters sound the same no matter who is speaking, and the chats are boring and pointless.I feel bad giving such a negative review, but I honestly don't understand why this book is so highly rated. I guess if you want a non stop happy train this is the book for you, but if you like plot and character development, I'd steer clear of this one.

The world in this book has some interesting possibilities, but that is all there is to this book. The main character, Laura, is a happy Realtor, discovers she's got magic powers, resists on one level but embraces totally on another practical level. It seems as though the main story was intended to be her struggle to come to terms with her change in reality, but the character is too darned Perfect. She's learned to roll with punches, never makes a really wrong choice, and has amazingly awesome powers that she somehow made it through life without noticing. No real lasting mistakes were made, no tension ever shows up between characters, no big choices have to be made that weren't already (literally) preordained. The characters were largely flat. Most of the "conversations" sounded like a soliloquy split between two people. This was worse at the beginning, and did get a bit better by the end. It gives me some hope for upcoming novels, clearly the author is capable of improving, and as she got further into the story they characters found their own voices more. I can only hope that in future novels that means they are capable of some interesting disagreements and different points of view.In the end it was a very cute introduction to a world that That made me sad, because I really enjoyed the world setting. Of course, the majority of the book read more like "A Witch lover's guide to the Modern World" than an actual novel. The author clearly loves her world and wants to share it. It is my hope that she finds a real story to share it in.

I really tried to like this book, but I couldn't. There was really no plot or point to the book. It's a story about a woman who discovers she's a witch. She meets some very nice witches and everyone lives happily ever after. There is no antagonist, no intrigue and no character development. I think the author has a good premise for a series, but the plot wasn't developed well enough to grab your attention and keep it. I kept waiting for something to happen and it never did. I will not be reading other books in this series.

I can't ever remember having been more disappointed by a book categorized as "Fantasy/SciFi". Its all fluff and rainbows and trite dialog. There is no story, there is no plot, there is no purpose. Lauren finds out she is a witch and meets the other witches. Everyone is happy and sugary sweet and chatty. The end. There. Now you don't have to read it.
