Elwood McQuaid deserves credit for compiling Henryk Weichert's amazing and uplifting life story. It is a sad chronology of horrific events in the life of a ten-year old Jewish boy, in occupied Poland. To save their son from Nazi persecution, Henryk's mother dropped him off at an orphanage. From that moment Henryk never saw his mother and the rest of his family again. When the orphanage closed down he became homeless, a suffering wanderer. By hiding his Jewish identity, he managed to survive. He pulled through the war by begging, stealing and at times working as a farmers' hand, outside the Warsaw Ghetto. When the WWII ended in may 1945, the killing centers in Poland and Germany could no longer murder innocent people. Survivors needed help to be revived. The narrated travails that Henryk had to endure, after the war, are illustrative of difficulties Holocaust survivors had been encountering after the liberation. This phenomenon is not common awareness. As a Holocaust survivor, I know how difficult it was to locate surviving family members, to find shelter or basic necessities. The Russian Army that liberated me told me:" you are liberated, but you are on your own." There were so many hurdles and obstacles on our path to recover from bondage, to heal our physical and mental scars to reinvigorate our emaciated bodies. For me, the Holocaust did not completely vanish with the end of the war. Distressful times have been lingering on. Like Henryk, ominous occurrences and phobias will continue to simmer in my mind till the end of my days. Holocaust survivors do not have to live with the past; the past lives within them. As McQuaid writes, the tattooed numbers on their forearms faded somewhat over the years, but the memories had not. While we may wear today nice suits we cannot forget the striped uniforms we had to wear in the concentration camps.

This is a heartbreaking but still fascinating and somehow uplifting tale of a young Jewish boy who survived the Holocaust all alone, by his own wits. After finally escaping the hell in Europe and making it almost all the way to British "Palestine" by ship, he and his fellow refugee shipmates are interned on Cyprus. At the dawn of the modern Jerusalem 3,000: THE POISONER'S AGENDAJewish state he finally reaches the land of Israel only to be immediately thrown into combat, unprepared, untrained, but knowing there is no alternative but to fight again for survival, this time against five attacking Arab nations. But the story does not end there. It goes on over the next five decades, as he finds a job, marries, and continues to be called into service in the Israeli army. His incredible skill and brave dedication as a sapper in the Israeli army through the course of 5 wars earns him respect and friendship. But there is a shocking twist to the story. This man, a Jew, an Israeli citizen, a trusted Israeli soldier, had been irreligious as a youth. He'd never studied Hebrew. Dumped on the shores of the struggling state as a teenager, he largely teaches himself Hebrew, using a classic text, the Hebrew Bible. How this affects his world-view, his marriage, his children, his neighbors, is a story unto itself.Olivia Rodan Jacobs, author of Jerusalem 3000, The Poisoner's Agenda --- [...]

This book touched me in ways I had not expected. Zvi survived the atrocities of the holocaust and lived to tell the world what really happened. His life was nearly destroyed by Hitler's evil regime, but God had another plan in mind for the life of little Zvi. This book is a golden triumph!

I can highly recommend reading this book to anybody. Zvi's personal account on surviving the Holocaust, immigrating to Israel and experiencing firsthand the struggle of the re-founded, tiny state of Israel, thriving against all odds over the decades, gives invaluable insight, especially in light of increasingly biased media coverage. Equally amazing is his account of finding the Messiah, (who by the way he was not even looking for) solely by reading through the bible on his own.Once you start reading the book, you won't be able to put it down again.

I purchased this book for a friend. I've met Zvi, and have enjoyed his columns in Friends of Israel magazine for many years. I own a first edition of this book, and it is a prized book. Zvi overcame incredible odds as a Jewish boy in Poland who was put into a Polish orphanage by his mother to give him a chance to survive the Holocaust. His experiences are surreal, and his maturity, even as a young boy, defy explanation. After immigrating to Israel, Zvi became a mine detector and fought in four wars. If you enjoy books about Holocaust experiences you will love this book.

A book that will touch your heart and stay with you for the rest of your life. Don't miss this one!

I found out many things about how the Jews were persecuted during the halaucaust and how the Jews persecuted the completed Jews in their new homeland. I also saw how the Lord watches over ALL his children; especially during times of persecution.

True story of ZVI, a young Jewish child, separated from his family at the onset of the Holocaust and the horrible challenges and hardships he endured from a young 10 year old child until age 18 and beyond. It was a miracle he survived. The story brought tears to my eyes when I remember the wonderful life I was having during the years of ZVI's struggles.
