I purchased this because I bought a 2000 Cherokee with some repairs needed. I wanted to save some money with some DIY repairs. The main repair is that the blower fan does not work. I ordered Haynes b/c chiltons is not available for this vehicle. When I was talking with my mechanic about another car, he said I need to check the relay switch. This book has one paragraph referencing relay switches. Nothing about the specific switch I need to change. I looked up several other issues I wanted to explore and there is nothing. It is all about major repairs or simple service, nothing in between. If it is major, I'd take it to my mechanic and I already know how to change oil and spark plugs. It's the in between that I want to do myself. Live and learn... $23 gone and more to have my mechanic change the relay switch.

Very good book to have if you work on your own vehicle. Problems are when you need details for the exact year vehicle your are working on. In other words; if you want to change out the radiator, the book will give you general info on what to do and a general picture of what it looks like, but instructions are not specific for the model year you are working on.

Based on reviews here, I decided to purchase both this book and the Chilton equivalent. I assumed that this book would contain more detailed information, since it does not attempt to cover the ZJ and XJ in the same volume. In some instances, this is true. If you are considering (or would ever consider) rebuilding your engine or other serious overhaul work, you should have this book, as there is more information dedicated to the four and six cylinder powerplants used in XJs. (I don't own a Comanche, so I'm not sure, but I get the sense that the Chilton manual gives more specific information for working on the truck suspension). The trouble shooting section of this book is also more complete and easier to use, so if you don't have a good feel for what systems are likely to be responsible for different problems, I would again recommend this manual. However, if your skill level falls somewhere in between these two extremes, I would recommend looking at the Chilton manual first. In nearly every case I've come across while working on my Jeep, the Chilton manual gave better diagnosis (determining the problem with a part rather than just isolating it as a potential source of trouble) and repair instructions than the Haynes Manual. With that said, I would concur with the opinion stated by other reviewers that anyone serious about working on their jeep should own both books.

This isn't the book for owners of 1997-2001 Cherokees. We bought this book for our son in 2012, when he purchased a 2000 Jeep Cherokee. (Not the Grand Cherokee, the plain old Cherokee.)The problem with this book is that it's focused on the earlier versions of that long-lived vehicle. The "XJ" Cherokee was manufactured from 1984 through 2001, but was refreshed several times. There was a significant redesign of the body and mechanical components in 1997, and of the engine in 1999, and this book pretty much ignores them.So if you have a 1984-1996 Cherokee, this book is a wealth of information. If you have a 1997-2001, you won't find much, unless of course it's for the parts that weren't changed in the 1997 update.

First off, I'm a you-tube mechanic at best. I'm rating it 3 stars, for someone like me, this manual seems to skip a lot of steps and starts in the middle of some projects (crank sensor). Wiring diagrams titles didn't quite match my 2000 XJ, the wiring matched the pre-97 blower resistor. So a hard to find wiring diagram was there but...not as easy to find as it could have been. Still a good reference to have and it has paid for itself by showing me where to start a project instead of having to punt to a pro shot. I have heard the same thing of the Chilton Jeep manual and have been advised that I need to get one of those in addition, not instead of, this one. It definitely covers things that bleep-n-jeep hasn't (yet).

anyone who worked on Autos back pre 90's had these, it's old school but sometimes you need some pages to get greasy!!! Working on a project is just not the same without thumbing through a greasy Haynes!!

Great book for routine maintenance however if you are not mechanically inclined it would be wise to seek a youtube or do it yourself video as well. This book is written for someone with knowledge in mechanics not for a newbie / first-timer.

Great book! Has words in it and pictures too!Seriously, it's a great book for doing repairs, but it's only a portion of what you need when you're working on a Jeep. I recommend Haynes, Chilton's and if you can find it, get an FSM (Factory Service Manual, not Flying Spaghetti Monster - seriously, why were you even thinking that?) for your make and model - you'll thank me later.Haynes has stuff that Chilton's doesn't have and vice versa. And the FSM will have things neither of the other two even considered adding.
