Not sure why it is called a shop manual. A guy in a shop who is depending on this "shop manual" is in real trouble. It is not very comprehensive. The index is wrong, for example- information on the oil pump is not found on the page listed for oil pump info. Parts of the manual are fairly comprehensive but I found it lacking in many areas. It appears to be a botched reproduction of manual that really was a good one. I found the same manual in a tractor store for twice the price, so it is probably worth the money although one would have to seek out other sources of information to "fill in the gaps".
The problem the other reviewers may have had with this manual is that The Index is not numbered by pages. It is numbered by Paragraphs which is stated at the top of page 6 in big bold letters. I have used this manual to restore a 1949 Ford 8N and it is my go to manual. This is also my first restoration so I relied heavily on it.N-complete sells this manual as part of a set of five manuals. One is a catalog, a parts manual with drawings of ALL parts and where they go, Owners manual, Maintenance manual, and this Shop manual.If you are restoring or just fixing a Ford N-series or century series tractor google N-complete.
If you are going to have only one reference manual this is the one to have. A reproduction of the original shop manuals. It has more diagrams and parts list then any reference material you will find. The other reviews refer to problems with the table of contents are incorrect. The table of contents list the paragraph number not to the page number.
This was a gift for my Dad. It is not the usual brand of shop manual he usually buys, but I was not able to find this particular model series by any other manual producer at the time. I was unsure since it is a brand I have not heard of, but we were both pleasantly surprised by the quality of the manual.This book has all of the information needed to complete repairs on these tractors. The amount of detail in the diagrams, the easy to follow instructions, and the well presented specifications are absolutely as good as the other major publishers. This book has all of the information necessary to repair or rebuild this Ford series tractor.Dad had his tractor up and going within a week of receiving the manual. I guess the saying is true that you can't "judge a book by it's cover (or brand)." If you have this model tractor, this book can help you repair it.
This thing is just a reprint of the original OEM manual. Unfortunately, the OEM manual was a real dog when it comes to directions for the owner/operator who wanted to do his own service and repairs. These old manuals really weren't written for anyone who wasn't already experienced with tractors. So, if you're reasonably handy you're probably going to be able to figure stuff out and read between the lines for things the original left out.If you're new to tractors and machinery, you're going to get some good from it but probably not enough to do any major service yourself.I was an instructional designer and technical writer for many years and was appalled at the assumptions made by the authors of this manual.
They made over a million of the Ford n series tractors and 50 years later 75% of them are still around. With this book you'll find they're super easy to fix and since New Holland still carries "all" of the parts for them, save yourself some money and grab one.
i recommend this book for anymore who might be looking for a manual for their ford n series tractors. i recieved mine just the other day and its great. the only problem with the manual is the index is alittle off on things but the book is good in getting you started on the road to fixing and repairing your tractor. pictures of parts and instruction is well done
Got this for hubby for that blankety-blank old tractor of his (an 8N). The darn thing had him and his mechanic friend stumped; this manual cleared away the fog. Still plotting on how to kill the tractor, but that's another story.
