Arthur Pap's technical discussions mask a serious philosophical problem with ramifications far beyond the analytical. If there are absolute truths, how do we find them and how do we define them in such a way that shows we are not just making them up? His examination of logical empiricism is especially interesting because the empiricists were right to reject the metaphysics of past eras as incoherent speculations that resolved nothing and yet the empiricists also failed to resolve the question of what counts as a necessary truth even if limited to mathematical logic, mathematics and mathematical physics because the semantic interpretations reintroduce the metaphysical paradoxes that objectivists seek to banish. Written in 1958 Pap's book remains a difficult and challenging read but the rewards are many and thoughtful considered.
