Colt: An American Classic (Collector's Guides)

The year 2015 marks the 180th anniversary of Colt’s first patent for a firearm with a revolving cylinder and the 160th anniversary of the enterprise originally named Colt’s Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company. During that time, Colt and the succession of firms that continue to bear his name have produced iconic revolvers and rifles that have done nothing less than shape the course of history. Among these are the first Colt Paterson revolver in 1836, the Colt Single Action Army of 1873, popularly known as the Peacemaker and the “Gun that won the West,” the Model 1911 pistol, and the M16 assault rifle, emblematic of the American military experience in Vietnam. Today, Colt are best known for the M4 Carbine, stalwart of every branch of the U.S. military, the CQBP (Close Quarters Battle Pistol), and popular civilian models, such as the Colt Defense CM901 rifle and Colt Match Target series. Illustrated with more than 200 artworks and photographs and accompanied by exhaustive technical specifications, Colt: An American Classic is an expertly written account of the firearms produced by one of the world’s best-known and easily recognized gun manufacturers.REVIEWS "... details the development stories of all these Colt weapons, including technical details It is split into an Introduction with then 4 main chapters, on Percussion Revolvers 1830-1905: Twentieth Century Revolvers: The M1911 and Semiautomatic Pistols: Machine Guns, Rifles and Assault Rifles, and all rounded off with a Glossary and Index to help you find something specific...well illustrated throughout, with photos of the real things, of them in use and some Hollywood images as well. Various Colts have been made famous in the hands of Bonnie Parker (a Detective Special) in the crime wave she undertook with Clyde Barrow, with Steve McQueen in Bullitt (Colt Diamondback), Cathy Bates in the film 'Misery' (Colt D Frame revolver), a Colt Python owned by Elvis Presley and a Colt Cobra used by Jack Ruby to shoot Lee Harvey Oswald. The Colt story is an interesting one to read, partly perhaps because even after 180 years it is has not yet ended so there remains an untold story to come. In the meantime, this provides an excellent guide for a collector or indeed anyone interested in one of the most famous makes of firearm that will ever be known. Well done to the author Michael E Haskew for making a good job of it, and for Amber Books for publishing it."Military Modeling

This was a well-illustrated book, but unfortunately it contained too many errors to be of much use to a collector. In my experience, books about firearms that are published in England are frequently like this. I'm not sure whether it's bad editing or lack of knowledge. This book contained errors in firearms' names, calibers, and dates. Many errors, in fact. The book should be considered a supplemental resource, rather than a definitive one.

Great book for my collection
