This is a fun little quote book that is priced right. It has, in chronological order, quotes from all of the presidents under the Constitution up to Clinton. This is rather a singular book, considering the scope of what the editor has done. Some presidents, such as Lincoln, Kennedy, or Reagan who have been blesses with blarney and gab, have great humorous quotes. Some presidents have a more philosophical bent, such as Jefferson and Madison, so a quote book does not do them justice. Others, such as Grant or Silent Cal Coolidge, are taciturn, so you need to track quotes down with a magnifying glass and metal detector. This book has ample quotes from all of the then-42 presidents, and is great for people who like quote books, public speakers, politicians, or people looking for bullet-thoughts that hit the target.
My main complaint is a bit unusual, but you should be forewarned. This slim paperback volume is printed in what appears to be 9 point type, i.e. the letters are significantly smaller than in "normal" books, with less space between lines. It makes it uncomfortable to read.
This is an excellent reference for writers and readers of any ilk. The quotes are well chosen, and almost every president is well represented with the quote selection. The book is easy to use to the point of being faster than an electronic reference. It is no tome, but isn't meant to be, either. Especially eye opening and useful are the quotes of the early presidents and founders of our nation.
Before one even opens up this book, one can sense an inherent bias: on the cover of the book are nine universally recognized great Presidents (Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Lincoln, Grant, both Roosevelts, Truman, Kennedy)...and one other, namely Barack Obama. No Ronald Reagan, no Eisenhower, no Calvin Coolidge to counteract such Leftism...not even James Madison. And then when one opens the book, one can see that George Bush was hardly quoted at all, despite serving two full terms, while once again, Barack Obama is quoted extensively, despite him barely even getting into the White House when this book was published. I guess the Left never, ever stops their brainwashing efforts, not even for one moment.
We bought this little book to send to an out-of-town friend who expressed admiration for quotations from it which we post on an internet social networking site. The Presidential quotations cover many subjects and are for the most part still appropriate for current political events. We recommend this little book as a valuable addition to the reference section of any library.
"Wit and Wisdom of the American Presidents" is an outstanding collection of sayings of the Presidents through the ages and is excellent for public speakers and writers who quote the writings of famous people to establish their points.
Nice relaxing read that's thought provoking and it gives the reader an inside look at the individual behind the words.
If you like history or politics, you gonna love this book.
