The Hispanics in the English class which I teach are all at different levels and have different strengths, but when I passed around the library copy of "Ingles para Latinos", Level 1, the students agreed that they would like to start with this book. I ordered copies through , and we have been using it for several classes. It is working out very well as a basic format for learning, although I always include related conversational opportunities and worksheets. The book works so well because even if some students are familiar with certain material, it acts as a good review. Because it is written in Spanish, they can read the lessons at home. I just emphasize the points that I feel are most important in class, and use the text as a "jumping-off point". My students are not interested in academics. They just want to be able to converse comfortably with their employers, medical personnel, and their children's teachers. This text is perfect for that purpose. Also the students are finding the CDs extremely helpful as they can listen to them at home or in the car.
On a trip north from where I live in Mexico, I picked up this book for my Mexican goddaughter who was then ten. She is now 12 and taking extra curricular classes in English. When she took this book along to show to her teacher he was very enthusiastic and approved her using it in class. The teacher said, "This is an example of the most recent and best teaching methods. I only wish I had enough copies for all my students." I was very happy to have discovered this book in the states!
I have used both this book and its follow-on "Segundo Nivel" (2nd level) book in ESL tutoring for Latino students. It is hands-down excellent for that purpose, but there are a couple of up-front requirements that a buyer should know about. One, the student needs strong competency in reading Spanish (it's a book, after all), and so many Latinos speak perfect Spanish but never learned to read well. And second, most obviously, the teacher or tutor also needs at least moderate ability to read and speak Spanish in order to guide the student in the manner intended by the author. If those two prerequisites exist, then buy this book and expect great results.
This book is for Spanish readers. We are using this at church for people who are literate in Spanish and wish to improve their English. It is great to use as a vocabulary review and to motivate people to practice what they already know without waiting to be perfect. It is more enjoyable to use than other texts because it isn't too academic or formal. There are a few errors (typos) that an English speaker will need to correct. We plan on using the level 2 book also.
I ordered a bunch of these for a conversational English class I'm trying to teach -- this book seems geared more toward folks learning English independently, on their own, and is excellent for that purpose. (hmm, quizas debo escribir esto en espanol, porque seria mas util para Latinos! -- si quiere Ud aprender el ingles pero no hay clases o maestros disponibles, este libro es perfecto!)
Book is okay, but they are mixed between 'useful' vocabulary for beginners. CD's are hard to follow!! They just keep talking and talking and talking... non stop. The student does not have anything in the book that allows them to follow the dialogs. Waste of paying that extra $$ . Get the book w/o the CDs.
I teach and ESL class to a group of Latino adults. This helps to explain some difficult ideas for beginners. Por ejemplo: la diferencia entree "she" y "her". Tambien utilice pronunciacion fonetica en parentesis. Es muy bien para principiante principiantes...
I have a TESOL certificate (UCR) and speak several languages. Foreign language study and students are not new to me, For several weeks here in Panama, I have been helping in an English conversation class. Without a text and with students at various levels of English, it was quite a challenge. And then I found Ingles Para Latinos. Students can study the book at home, learn at useful vocabulary, and try out new sentence structures in the classroom. Even with the cost of postage to Central America, the book and shipping do not put a strain on the pocketbook. A good command of English here is considered the equivalent of a second college degree. This book means more than just a good and painless way to learn English, It is the key that will open doors in the near future to better jobs and a higher standard of livng.I do not recommend self-study, but the phonetics used in the book come close to having a teacher to help with pronunciation. (As you are aware, there are sounds in English that do not exist in Spanish, and English spelling is so different from how words are pronounced that beginning students must learn their pronunciation word by word. The text, however, does a great job showing how the vocabulary is pronounced.)Nobody in the book, thank goodness, asks if the fountain pen of your aunt is on the table. The examples make sense and can be put to immediate use. The vocabulary is so practical, so useful in real life situations. The author even included hand gestures. There are even games.I wish the book had more indepth conversations at restaurants, stores, churches, parties, etc. A number of students asked for help greeting customers, talking about the "special of the day", giving instructions/directons, etc.Professor Harvey has made the study of English accessible to Latino students while making life a lot easier for the volunteers who use his book.Gracias, mop! (Panamanian slang for "Thanks, buddy!")Boquete, Chiriqui, Panama
