Beautifully illustrated book of ideas for western/dry country gardens. Lots on hardscaping, architectural design as well as the use of plants. Sections of fire-resistant plants, privacy and pets are especially appreciated, considering the region in focus. The section on the latter is thinner than I would have wished, but still very good. A fine, overview of western gardening with many interesting and practical ideas for planning, building and planting.
Even thought I am originally from New England, over the years I have I generally enjoy most of Sunset's gardening guides and this is no exception.The book is geared to the California gardener, not really to gardening in the "West". In that regard it was helpful for us (we just moved to Northern California) but it would be of little use to someone gardening in Nevada or Arizona. I am delighted with the information I've gleaned from the book as it is appropriate for our needs, but it would probably be helpful to have that referenced in the title of the book.
I am a subscriber to Sunset magazine. It is apparent that most photos in this book are taken directly from the magazine.It is a rehashing of the magazine, which is a good magazine, and I will continue to subscribe.If you are a subscriber, you don't need to purchase the book.
A good book for the novice and for landscape designer. Many ideas for designing outdoor rooms, patios and courtyards, hardscaping pathways, terraces and water ponds; providing the finishing touches including sheds, bird baths and containers. All together a good buy.

Love this book - it includes lots of ideas, sketches, good thoughts. It summarizes many of the Sunset articles, but in an organized way. We're using it to help convert our front lawn into a beautiful, edible garden along with a couple of other books, including The Beautiful, Edible Garden written by Leslie Bennett and Stefani Bittner.
We are planning on removing our lawns - front and back and needed some guidance on where to start. This book is the perfect guide on planning the layout and which plants to use. Can't wait to get started!
The old Western I grew up with was informative and easy to use. This newer edition is organized in such a way that it is frustrating to use, the pictures are so small they are difficult to recognize and it is totally useless.
