Before taking the act a second time, I decided to purchase this book. I used the barrons act book before my first test and wanted something that would help me raise my score a couple points. This book is very similar to the barrons book in terms of tone and information. The english section was the only outstanding part of this book. It gave great tips on comma usage and how to tell what answer the act testmakers want. My score did raise a point in the english section in my second test. However the rest of the book was not that helpful. My reading score raised two points, but I think it was mainly the practice, not the book, that helped me. My math and science scores both went down a point which was very frustrating, given that those where the scores I was aiming to raise. The math and science portions of the book were disasters. The math section was riddled with wrong answers which made checking my work a nightmare. The book continually referred to chapters that were simply not there and didn't cover a lot of the material that the barrons book did. The science porrion gave similar advice to the barrons book and gave some seemingly helpful science background knowledge. Unfortunately, the book gave WRONG information! For example, the book classified substances above seven on the pH scale as acids and below seven as bases. It also discussed other terms related switched around too, which clearly showed this was not just a typo. Thankfully, I have two parents that are teachers so I could double check info with them, but again trying to study with possibly wrong info is a NIGHTMARE!! All in all the english section was helpful, but the rest of the book was not worth my time or the money I paid for it. Next time I take the act, I will be purchasing the barrons 36 book in hopes that it does what this book did not, raise my composite score three points.
ACT ELITE 36 offers some interesting test taking strategies. Unfortunately, the sample questions are riddled with errors!
Errors in sample test questions, incorrect number of questions for some practice tests- good practice, but not accurate
My daughter credits this book with her increase in her most recent ACT score. Was scoring well, but this 2 point increase (plus a 36 on the math), should put her into a new level of schools or scholarships.
