As an educator, I have to look through everything that's out there. The bigger companies churn out title after title, and one can't help but get the impression that much material is recycled and re-hashed. This is unfortunate, because the official tests themselves are constantly updated. When there is a large-scale revision, as in the case of this year's SAT, the recycling approach really falls flat.I'm of the conviction, which many of my colleagues share, that there is no substitution for a solid basis in the educational fundamentals. Tricks and pep-talks only go so far. At some point, students need to sit down and learn the things they don't understand, and practice them. This book provides just that. Its strength is in the clear, focused presentation of fundamental concepts in grammar, literature, and mathematics, and the copious, well-explained practice examples that accompany each topic. Each of the six-tests comes with step-by-step explanations for every single question. I don't know of another prep-book out there that is as thorough. In my experience, this level of attention is not available unless you are willing to spend several hundreds on a commercial prep course.I had never heard of this publisher, but I was thrilled to find that somebody had taken the time to produce an actual tool that I, as an educator, could utilize, without making excuses for its lackadaisical presentation of content. Cannot recommend highly enough, for students and teachers alike.
I am taking the new SAT this summer and have bought many prep books to study. I like KALLIS SAT book the best because it provides the most practice tests and questions as well as the explanations for each problem. The book has the scoring chart for the practice tests which is missing from other prep books. Overall, the book provides great lessons that are separated by the "Question Topics" and explains each "topic" thoroughly. I recommend this book for my fellow high schoolers! Let's ACE this!
I bought this book to help my daughter prepare for her upcoming test. I decided to design lesson plans for her, so it was very important that the guide we work with is well organized, clear and concise. To make sure we had the right guide, I looked at several books before picking Kallis’ SAT Pattern Strategy. I eventually chose Kallis’ book because it breaks down each question type (101!) and gives useful strategies for each of them. The answer explanations help meclarify concepts that I have a hard time communicating to my daughter.
I own a test-prep academy and am very familiar with all the changes on the new SAT. I have also used all the new products from all the major companies such as Kaplan, Princeton Review, etc., and have found that, while none of them is without its errors, none is completely useless either. Of course, I am not surprised that many smaller companies are taking advantage of the early state of conditions with the test's recent release to make extraordinary claims of having the only superior product and claiming that many of the other companies rushed to print not having done the requisite research. Anyone who has taken a class in basic marketing can surmise the "truth" present in such dubious claims. That being said, I have found in all fairness that this book hits the mark in many ways and misses it in many others. Overall, the format of the Reading and Writing and Language Tests (i.e., the question types and frequency) adhere quite accurately to the format of the new test. Yet many of the "correct" Reading Test multiple choice responses require assumptions on the part of the reader that the real test will not. And, the math on these practice tests is much, much harder than those on the actual SAT. So, would I recommend this book? Yes, I would. I would recommend it as much as all the other major companies' SAT test prep books, which are imperfect but altogether helpful when used realistically for what they are worth.
Personally as a high school student i felt like it helped me have a better understanding of the new SAT. Since they changed it I didn't have anything to reference to and this book really helped. It comes with 6 practice tests that you can take to prepare yourself and detailed explanations of practice questions so you can really understand which questions you got wrong. If you're going to take it soon then i suggest you buy this book to help you study.
I'm a High School Math Teacher and I got this book for a SAT review for my kids. I found the problems far more complex than any of the other SAT preps, and feel that this book will do more to discourage than prepare 90% of High School kids. The only value for this book is for a kid who had scored in the 700's on the PSAT
This is just what I needed for the high school I have been tutoring for the SATs. My student has been preparing for the SATs for a while now and when we both heard that the test is going to be reformatted, we went on the hunt for the right and updated book to study with. This is very well made and put together. The changes from the previous version of the SATs are transparent, well-written, and the 6 practice tests are beyond great! As an instructor, I highly recommend this to all the high school students studying for the SATs! :)
