I am an elementary school guidance counselor who wanted to create a service learning program in my school, but wasn't sure how to get it off the ground. This book not only offers service learning project ideas, but also how to tie them to curriculum. It also suggests different fiction and non-fiction literature on the subject by grade level!!!
This book is a very inspiring guide to implementing service learning projects in each classroom. It offers countless practical, specific, easy ways for teachers to teach their students new skills and the value of contributing to their community. I would definitely say that this book is a must-read for any teacher or parent!

I am teaching teachers tomorrow about the 40 Developmental Assets and integrating Service Learning into their curriculum. Your book is great. It is thorough. It is user friendly and it has great information that is easy to digest. I especially like the "Across the Curriculum" sheets.

This is a good foundational resource. It is a bit limited in theoretical context and depth, however has some great ideas for getting started. There are also some very nice templates for facilitating planning, thoughtful writing/processing, and reflecting for students which is an essential component of service learning.
When I bought this book I had hoped for more insight into the impact of service learning. Although there is some rationale for service learning in this book, it is mostly a guide book to help one develop the service learning experience. The greatest part of this book is the suggested literature to combine with the service learning project. Great for all ages!
The Complete Guide To Service Learning has changed the way we do things at my elementary school. As an elementary school principal in my district, it is important that we implement the 40 Developmental Assets framework. I don't see a better way to implement the 40 Assets framework than to do it with service learning. Service learning is known as a gateway asset, and it seems much more efficient to focus on this instructional concept to build as many Assets as possible. The transformation of the "Canned Food Drive" discussed in this book is a terrific story to discuss with staff when implementing service learning for the first time. The story as well as the book is both inspiring and informational.
As a first-year Service Learning teacher, I find this product essential to understanding what Service Learning is all about. Plenty of concrete project ideas, book resources, and activities are in easy reach for teachers and students.
