After 29 years as an independent admissions counselor, I hope I can speak with some authority when I suggest that _Admissions Matters_ is the finest guide of its kind. Without the hype, gaming the system, and spurious "cut the line" advice that passes for counsel in some college admissions guides, Sally, Jon and Joyce tell the truth about every aspect of the process. My favorite section is titled "Model ethical behavior and integrity." What a refreshing viewpoint. The authors tell the truth--that college admissions is a match to be made, not a game to be won. I highly recommend this book as an excellent resource for college-bound students and their parents. It's well written, presented without hype, and provides solid guidance for researching colleges and creating a balanced application list (of safety schools, possibles and reaches).I'm a college snob. Nearly everyone in my family attended a prestigious college, including me. It's hard not to carry my own background into my current dealings with my child, who, while motivated to attend a selective college, isn't nearly as caught up in "prestige" as I always have been. So here I am, 25 years later, going through the college research/admission process for the first time with my eldest child.I've bought and read an embarrassing number of college books, and I'm learning how different and much more competitive the college admissions process is today. Much of it is out of our control, which led me to experience some panicky feelings, I'll admit. Have a student with a high GPA, as rigorous a course load as possible for her high school, a long list of varied extracurricular activities and awards, is an all-around awesome kid BUT (insert screeching tires noise here): only has average standardized test scores? What to do? Do we keep this college on the list or delete it? This book helped us navigate through those feelings. I have a great kid (as I'm sure those of you reading this do, too). I need to be hopeful that one of her chosen colleges will see that too.This was not the first college book I purchased, but I wish it had been. You can read about college acceptance stats, selectivity ratings and SAT/ACT median scores until you're blue in the face; this book explains the college application process in a straightforward, non-threatening manner. I hope I'll also be able to get my child to read it too, but if not, at least I'm armed with realistic information to guide her through the process.
I read this book in manuscript form as a former high school counselor, current admission officer at a selective liberal arts college, and as a father of four whom I've shepherded through the college process. I have to admit to more than a little cynicism about college guides as so many folks have jumped on the college advice bandwagon. ADMISSION MATTERS made me question my cynicism: It is so thorough and up to date that this is the only guide one needs to understand all the basic info and nuanced info involved in college admission. I'm hard to impress but I'm impressed with ADMISSION MATTERS.
I got this book the first time around when my own two kids were applying to college. But the admissions landscape has changed so much now that I'm helping my niece that I needed to brush up. My niece needs financial aid and this book is so useful. It covers just about any topic on admissions you might think of. The book is also so calming and reassuring for both of us.The testimonials inside the front cover include some from admissions deans who say they wish they had had the book when their own children were applying. I can see why. This is the only book you'll need!
Admissions Matters gives a clear, useful overview of the admissions process that I think is especially useful for parents who are ambitious for their amazing children to attend one of a very small number of uber-selective schools. The book clarifies some of the vagaries of admissions, especially around athletics, and sets up an easy-to-follow calendar that details what happens (or should happen) when. This is a good partner text to the more rah rah style of College Admission: From Application to Acceptance, Step by Step, especially for parents who need a little reality check as they embark on the process of navigating the complicated world of college admissions and financial aid.
I have three teens, all less than 2 years from college and this book has been a savior in figuring out what steps to take, and when to take them.I bought the earlier addition two years ago and just updated it with this latest addition.I recommend the latest addition, but don't feel you are missing out on anything super important by grabbing an earlier addition.We have monthly to bimonthly meetings with the teens (sometime as a family and sometimes one-on-one) and go through portions of the book that are currently relevant to where each teen is at. It is nice for us all to be on the same page and to all be working together to help the teens get on track for getting into their top choices for college.It has also been nice to make them take a more active role in the steps to take now to prepare for college and college admissions.On the fence about getting this book?I would go for it.If anything, it gives you a nice reference to point to when your teen(s) try to tell you, you don't know what you are talking about.
