PANDAS And PANS In School Settings: A Handbook For Educators

PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Strep) and PANS (Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) occur when an abnormal immune response produces brain inflammation, leading to unusual psychological symptoms in children. Symptoms can include OCD, tics, ADHD, anxiety disorders, sensory issues and marked personality changes. This practical handbook explains how educators can distinguish between these symptoms and pre-existing conditions, and offers strategies for supporting students with PANDAS and PANS in school settings. Contributions from experts provide educators with the understanding needed to be able to collaboratively identify PANDAS and PANS, and carry out effective interventions. As the rate of incidence of PANDAS and PANS increases, this book will be an essential resource for school staff in getting to grips with these complex disorders and overcoming the challenges they present.

Really really happy with this book. We had bought PANS, CANs and Automobiles by Dr. Jaime Greene before which I was not happy with overall (good content, but dense, difficult to read due to formatting, and overly jargony). In contrast, this book is very very readable and well organized. It is much more user friendly. I have been looking for a book to givr my daughter's teachers and found this. It has very similar recommendations to the other but is aimed at the reader being an educator. The appendix has a nice handout for teachers and a recommended letter for MDs to write to help a family get services. The other book had an excellent letter that helps a family initiate the task of entering SPED or 504. ( If you buy this one and not the other and are looking for yourself as a parent I suggest going to ldonline.org to see their samples.). As a psychologist and a mom of a PANDAS kid I recognize the need for clear help getting school to work and really appreciate how well this book has accomplished that role. If you are a parent looking for a book for yourself, Dr Greene's book is more helpful for direct assistance in getting services at school, creating an IEP and understanding what to ask the school to do. Highly recommend this as a fantastic school resource for staff. My only complaint is that the section on managing emotions and OCD behaviors is much much too short. And, I wish they had a little more there as so many of our kiddos are misunderstood in their behaviors and feelings and so many of us parents struggle with school refusal which isn't really covered. Maybe in the 2nd edition...

I have this book and the PANS, CANS and Automobiles. This was slightly more difficult for me to begin reading, as the format was not my favorite, but once I got into it, I really found the information easy to read and understand. Both books have some great suggestions for school accommodations and both have a good way of explaining P.A.N.D.A.S. AND P.A.N.S. in a very understandable format. I think both books have their merits and while they are similar both were worth reading for my situation.

This is a perfect gift for teachers or administrators new to accommodating neuroimmune illnesses in their schools. It gives a clear description of what the disorder is, input from families and educators who have worked with children with PANS/PANDAS, and concrete examples of how best to meet their educational needs.
