This book examines several behavioral case studies in a user-friendly format. The content of this book is enlightening and absorbing, while laced with the sardonic sense of humor of Dr. Newman. As a speech-language pathologist who knew close to nothing about ABA, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone involved with a child on the spectrum--or for anyone who simply would like a good read.
This book is a great tool to help learn and practice utilizing behavioral thinking in real life scenarios. The format allows the reader to examine a case study, develop their own hypothesis, and then flip to another section for the "solution", thus creating the ultimate training tool. What is great about this book is that it is interactive training on paper. Fifty-nine cases are included which are interesting and easy to read. It's a fun way to learn. More importantly, you are learning practical and useful information. I am always looking for parent friendly material. I especially liked that this book includes authors who are also parents and siblings of individuals with Autism. So hooray for that. It's a definite must-have.
I am always on the lookout for books about ABA that will appeal to my undergraduate Field Work class. Bobby Newman and Dana Reinecke's book Behavioral Detectives is a very useful teaching tool. The authors describe 59 challenging case consultations. There is a section of case studies and then a section of solutions. The person who reads the book as a self-tutorial can turn to the at the back of the book to learn how the authors thought about the case and how they identified the critical factors that were influencing the problematic behavior. For the faculty member who wishes to start a discussion about a particular aspect of ABA intervention one can read the case to the class and then encourage the students to discuss factors that might be pivotal in the person's failure to learn a new adaptive skill or why they are exhibiting a maladaptive behavior. One can ultimately share the authors' solution with the class. The book is clearly and engaging written with some fine bits of humor, and would be of interest to parents as well as students.
Bobby talks more about himself then the actual case study, and when it is time to reveal the "mystery' of how he solved the problem it is explained like this: "they had to change the behavior plan." He doesn't bother to explain what changes were made, and if he bothered to stick around to see if these changes actually had any effect. I bought this to give a staff training with, and it was basically useless. Did my own research, and feel I came up with a much better training for my staff.
Bottom line: Whether you buy this book for yourself to brush up on if you still remember what you learned in Theory, for the staff you supervise to ensure they are knowledgeable in deciphering good interventions from bad, or are in the field of developmental disabilities and wish to broaden your knowledge of ABA in the most practical sense you should buy this book. The interventions target everything from a failed token economy and what it is failing, to children who wont stay in their seats. I believe this book can be generalized to any age, and used in a wide variety of environments. If you can take one of the examples and apply it to your work, then I believe it is worth its weight in gold.
I had to get this book for a college class I was taking on ABA and Autism. I found it to be a fun way to learn~ It gives scenarios and you need to solve the meaning behind the behavior and appropriate ways to resolve them. I think this was one of my favorite texts and one I kept! Highly recommended by me.
As always, a Newman book delivers. I use this book in an intro Functional Analysis class at a State University, for students to practice skills with as they learn them. They enjoy the stories, and I like having real examples for them to practice with. The brief stories make for quick homework assignments, and I am able to quickly see which students need more instruction, or which topics I need to cover better! Thanks Bobby!
Behavioral Detectives provides a creative way for professionals and service providers to think about problems and solutions. This novel approach allows for readers to gather information, analyze information and come up with solutions. It's versatile and can enhance staff training programs for providers in school, adult day and residential programs. It would make a great gift to give to new hires as they sign on to practice behavior analysis in home, school and community settings. If nothing else, it's a great "coffee table book" for every household, every professional office and library. Kudos to the authors for reminding the field that "analysis" is the most important A in ABA!!
