We absolutely love this series. As a homeschooling family that practices Waldorf methods, I couldn't understand why my third child wasn't learning to read. His older two siblings picked it up so easily at the point he was in the curriculum we chose. I ordered something different, and then tried other/different methods. Nothing was working, and there were tears. He was then diagnosed as dyslexic, and we found this book series. It is working! We are now moving on to Blast Off To Reading, after completing the I Can Read books a and b. He has improved so much, and has even been reading some things on his own. He went from asking me if there was a way to get through life without learning to read (he is only 8, and this broke my heart) to trying out larger words all on his own. I cannot tell you how important these books are for our family. We are so grateful.
I absolutely agree with Laura; I am extremely disappointed in this book. I don't see any mention of an editor, which would have probably eliminated some of the issues. Running a "complete spell check on the entire text" doesn't correct grammatical errors and extra words. For instance, page 39 says, "Circle the short vowel that is in the middle of the words for the each picture:" I guess "FOR THE each picture" are "nonsense words"? Then, just below there is a picture of a tent. In some parts of the country, if not all, the word "tent" is pronounced with the short "i" sound. I'd say that's a pretty poor example to try to help a child learn a concept. Furthermore, I had to go ahead to page 43 to figure out that the brown thing on pages 34 and 38 was a bun. The pictures are pretty bad. These are just a few examples... An editor would have been a great addition: they usually take an average book and really make it shine. Using the dyslexic font would be very beneficial, as well. Hopefully there will be a revised edition coming out soon! In the mean time, I'd recommend not wasting your money + yours and your child's time on this book.
I was extremely disappointed in this book and the editors who did not do a great job of proof-reading. There are spelling mistakes which are not acceptable in a published text written for those who struggle with this very skill! Very disappointing. Do not purchase this series.
I used this book over the summer to help my 5yo and 6yo sons overcome some anxiety about learning to read. It is very accessible and fun for children with visual processing delays. The flashcards and games on the website that correspond with the book are great too. My sons both ask to play monster phonics and the rocket game from the website. It's a great system.
My only negative is the mistakes that can be found in the publishing of this book. I have found several mistakes and at times those mistakes throw my son for a loop when trying to find the correct answer.
I love the lessons in this book! We are currently using it with my son.
Nice program for young struggling readers
