Learners With Mild Disabilities: A Characteristics Approach (4th Edition)

A critical look at four high-prevalence mild disabilities as seen from several unique perspectives.      Learners with Mild Disabilities focuses on four high-prevalence disorders: mild intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, and ADHD. The text also considers the Autism Spectrum Disorders, such as HFA and Asperger’s Syndrome, in addition to other mild conditions such as communication disorders. This text looks first at the concept of disability from conventional categorical perspectives, and then shifts to focusing on learners from the perspective of alternative, non-categorical frameworks. It describes students with disabilities and related conditions with respect to a variety of individual strengths and needs, considering their cognitive, perceptual, language, academic learning, and social/emotional characteristics. The reader is encouraged to apply these conceptual frameworks through the analysis of numerous vignettes and extended case studies that are drawn from the experiences of real children and teachers throughout the text. Using this non-categorical framework best prepares special educators for the complex job of providing effective services to the full and unique spectrum of students with mild disabilities.

I want to point out that this book has amazing and useful information for anyone in Special Ed. That aside - the quality of the cover and pages is HORRIBLE! Something is wrong here! This book is $120+ and I feel like I can rip the entire book in half with my own two hands! The cover and pages are so flimsy! My brand new book came with bends in the cover, because it's impossible to avoid. I'm sure the bends happened during shipping. If it had a durable cover that wouldn't have happened. When I'm paying $120+ for a textbook I expect it to one, be in perfect condition, and two, have great quality. The pages are like newspaper, and any highlighting goes through the page. This is extremely frustrating to me, but I'm aware that this isn't 's fault. I'm just extremely disappointed in the cover and pages, and wish I was getting something more durable for the money I paid.

This was a required reading for me in a special education class. However, it was interesting learning about the various disabilities and I found myself reading some things to my husband. I liked the characteristics approach a little better than others I've read.

This is book is one i got for school. It is packed with a lot of good information. It was far cheaper than from the school book store. I got the book in a timely manner and in the condition the seller said it would be

This was a required reading for me in a special education class. However, it was interesting learning about the various disabilities and I found myself reading some things to my wife. I liked how this book was layed out; a little better than others I've read.

This book has tons of usef ingormstion, but is a difficult text to read. Not only is the font small but the content is very heavy. Definatly higher level of thinking required. Not undergraduate friend!

So far, all of my special education textbooks have helped me. This one as well as Educational Psychology will help prepare for the LBS 1 and supports in the classroom.

Never rent a textbook from - piece of crap book, cover falls off, and I am charged the price of a new book after paying almost as much as buying for renting. And, by the time the rental period is over, it is too late to leave feedback or contest it with . I will be contesting with my credit card company. Never never never will I ever rent a textbook from these idiots again.

Script is very dim poor quality book.
