Willard Mullin's Casey At The Bat And Other Tales From The Diamond

This book features one of America’s best-loved poems, “Casey at the Bat,” illustrated by legendary sports cartoonist Willard Mullin. In 1953, in conjunction with the fiftieth anniversary of the World Series, legendary cartoonist Willard Mullin created images illustrating one of America’s best-loved poems: Ernest Thayer’s “Casey at the Bat.” These images were then put on a series of drinking glasses that were given away as premiums at various major and minor league ballparks across America. The first set was issued on April 15, 1954, at the very first home game for the modern day Baltimore Orioles. The illustrations by Mullin were for years thought to have been lost, but were found at an auction in 2002. They have been meticulously reproduced to create this stunning edition of “Casey at the Bat.” This edition will include additional Mullin material like the “Fan’s Alphabet” from 1953 and the poems “Iron Horse Lou” and “O Brooklyn, My Brooklyn” from 1947. With a preface by Yogi Berra and an essay on the history of both “Casey” and Mullin’s images by noted baseball historian Tim Wiles, this edition of “Casey” is the most authentic ever produced. A keepsake for the ages. Two color

You've seen "Casey" only a few bazillion times. But you'll rarely enjoy a return visit as delightful as this. Mullin originally produced it for single distribution, to a convention of the oversight body that once governed minor league baseball. Lucky us that someone saw fit to make it available to everyone now. The classic Mullin character sketching fits "Casey" like a fastball in the right place would have fit if he could have hit it into the next state instead of whiffing on it. As it is, Mullin's sketches simply amplify and deepen the dilemna and the hope of both the protagonist and his rooters.

""Fraud" cried the maddened thousands". This book is a fraud. Nearly every stanza of the poem has been altered from the original. The original copy from the June 3.1888 San Francisco Examiner can be viewed on line as can many other reprints of the poem. The Mullin drawings and the book otherwise would have five stars if the poem itself was not butchered. These alterations are inexcusable.

Interesting and enjoyable.
