This is so enchanting. The illustrations are captivating, some from just after World War II evoking late 19th century celebrations in rural America, perhaps the heritage soldiers fought to preserve. There are more modern depictions of Yuletide in bustling cities, and fanciful animal characters. I love all the outdoor scenes filled with snow, as well as the detail on each Christmas tree. A fine book to read for a respite from holiday doings.
Ohmygosh, can hardly wait to give this book to my 5 siblings for Christmas. The instant it arrived, I had to open the book, page by page, just drinking in the lush pictures and taking my heart for a walk down memory lane! Nice touch that at the bottom of each page, it references the Little Golden Book the picture was originally taken from. May I also say how poignant it was that the book ended with the real meaning of Christmas - the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Very politically incorrect in today's broken society... Made me long for 1959.
Wow! I'm 63 and this book just hit the right chord for a little something to give to special friends who are of the same age. We recognized virtually every picture, the writings under each picture were perfect and it was all nostalgia held in our hands. I think this could become a special Christmas book for families with Grandparents who grew up in the 50s.
I'm sending these out to my siblings, all of who grew up with the Weekly Reader and Golden books. It's a hoot - makes a great greeting card and present in one.
What a lovely picture book for grown-ups! If you love Little Golden Books and they make you feel all nostalgic and warm and fuzzy inside this is the book for you. A beautiful picture book, where each page is taken from an LGB from the 40s-60s with one each from the 70s and 80s. Some of my favourite artists are here: Eloise Wilkin, Garth Williams, Tibor Gergely and Gustaf Tenggren. There's also plenty of Richard Scarry and Corrine Malvern, plus an illustrator I hadn't been familiar with whose pictures I now adore: Retta Worcester. I'm only skimming the top of the cream with the illustrators I mention, there are plenty more. The words make up a little story, for grown-ups, about Christmas, which is sweet and made me go "Awe" at the end. Of course, you can share the book with your child friends, but they may not find the illustrations as adorable as you do and you may want to skip some of the text aimed at the adult such as " And let's not even think about the hassles of holiday travel. the excess! The expense!" or "Why not put the kids' energy to good use?" I collect Little Golden Books and this one is a keeper for me. I'm definitely getting the Valentine's one coming out and need to get the first one put out earlier this year. Beautiful book with glossy, high quality pages.
Love this book! It is not a story book... but I bought it for the amazing vintage images. I love seeing what book each original image came from, and what year it was published. Some of the art from the early 50's is just fantastic! And I didn't know that MARY BLAIR illustrated a Golden Book!!! It's just adorable to sit on an end table for guests to discover. :)
I was a big fan of Ms. Muldrow's original book, but I think I may prefer this edition for its great focus on that wonderful holiday known as Christmas. The ins and outs, ups and downs, of the season are briskly and whimsically discussed with classic Little Golden Book illustrations to make all the right points. Rather than the simple list feature, this is a logical lead-up to Muldrow's ultimate message about the meaning and magic of the holiday season. Beautiful little book for Christmas.
The pictures and story are wonderful. Takes you back to your childhood and brings a smile to your face. My sisters and I all really enjoyed the way the author picked out pictures from different Golden Books to go with the story.
