This book isn't what I'd hoped it would be. I bought it after reading a positive article about it. I feel like it is lacking in depth. The only true takeaway is that tough guys have feelings, but it doesn't help go any deeper than that. And one of the examples of sort of hilarious. It's a big guy off his motorcycle crying because he hit a squirrel. So be prepared for roadkill.I also feel like the flow of the book isn't that great in terms of reading and looking at the pictures. And then there's the back cover. It says: "Superheroes, wrestlers, ninjas ... it seems like nothing gets them down, but they have feelings too, just like you and I." Um, not sure who edited this, but that should say "just like you and me." I know I'm a grammar geek, but seriously.
I can't believe there aren't more reviews for this book! It was sent as a present to my three-year-old boy from his uncle who lives in London. It was an instant hit with its intended audience and also his parents - the illustrations are brilliant and thoughtful, there is a lot to talk about on every page and our son can spend a long, long time looking at and talking about the pictures on the inside of the cover pages. I thought the story might be a bit too saccharine but it really is pretty perfect - and while the words are so simple but the pictures provide so much to talk about, I think it will work for quite a wide range of ages.
I got this for my nephews to counteract some of the macho male energy they get from their dad. I wanted something that showed manly men doing things that normal guys do. That and they love anything with a superhero on the cover.
I love this book! The art is wonderful. Big, bold colour blocks in a stylized form show all manner of tough guys: superhero, racecar driver, wrestler, motorcycle dude, pirate, astronaut, ninja, etc. Add simple text and you have a powerful picture book. So many books for boys these days try to tell boys they don't need to be tough, that virility isn't important. This book just gets it soooo right! Yes, you are a tough guy and guess what? tough guys cry and it doesn't make them weak! Every one of these pictures shows the tough guy crying and all sorts of various different feelings they are having that made them cry and it is ok because feelings and crying don't affect your testosterone levels. So go ahead and be a "tough guy" and cry when you feel like it. The book ends with two "tough guys", a boy and his father who love each other, reading this book. Absolutely love the message!
Moms, Dads, Grandmothers, Grandfathers, Aunts and Uncles....anyone who has little ones in your life...buy this book. You won't regret it. Adorable and profound at the same time.
Purchased this book for a 2 year old and he can not get enough of it. The book is short enough for his attention span and the illustrations are fantastic.
Beautifully written, sweet book. Highlighting that its okay and healthy to have feelings and we all deserve to be able to express them!
