Bill Heavey writes in a way that makes me laugh out loud and that's NOT an easy task for reasons listed below. Here is a sample from one of his stories..."When I felt the second bump, I set the hook like it was connected to the backside of an IRS auditor." His unique ability to write great stories and slide the humor in is like no other, this is a MUST buy for the outdoorsman that enjoys a laugh!I feel compelled to share a review which is a first for me. Friends have often said that I missed a calling, that I should have done comedy or been on stage, because I was always the one in class (or to this day in meetings) to whisper a joke or response and have others lose it and laugh out loud. I can't help it, things just pop into my head and I say them (although this has been a detriment too). I often laugh on the inside mainly because I feel comedians often slide the best line after the initial funny line and I never want to miss it. (which is why I can't watch comedies in the movies because I swear people laugh so loud through the best parts and you can't hear them) That being said, it takes a lot to have me laugh out loud, just ask my wife and girls who come running to make sure I am okay when they hear it, it often ends up with tears streaming down my face and they ask me if I am ok. If this has never happened to you, you are truly missing something great. This just may be the book to make it happen for you, I hope it does!!Good Reading,Patrick
I have been waiting for this book for quite some time. I love reading Bill Heavey's shorts in F&S. He has a way to relate to those of us who are less than perfect when it comes to the outdoor lifestyle. I have often described him as a mix between Douglas Adams (for a sort of dry wit) and Robin Williams (for his ability to bring a sense of warmth and humor to even the most tragic of situations). Another thing I absolutely love about all books that are collections of shorts ("Kerplunk!" being another example) is how you are not committed for long to any certain chapter (though some here are a bit longer than others). Perfect for the line in the DMV or any other situation that may have you wanting to occupy a few spare minutes (like ones that end in a flush). Some of the stories you cannot help but smile at, others you cannot help but get choked up after. In either case, they are stories that we are only human, and that we are not alone in that respect. Still, my only complaint is that I will probably have to wait another 5 years for the next one to come out. But still, well worth the wait.
A friend sent me a link to this book on FB and I figured wth I'll give it a try. To be honest reading isn't really my thing. I have a select few authors that I stick to and usually they still find a way to let me down. I'm gladly reporting here that I have found another writer worthy of adding to my short list. Thanks to the advice of my friend, whom also thoroughly enjoyed this, I'm listing this as a five star read. It was both humorous and entertaining. I'm looking forward to Heavey letting me down in the future.
This book (and Heavy) is not just VERY funny, and about hunting and fishing - it's more, much more. Heavy has a view of the world that cannot be matched. The lessons and experiences he shares with us are presented as only he can do. I recommend this book not just to everyone who has ever hunted and fished, but to EVERYONE. It's the perfect gift for everyone I know and for just about every occasion.
Bill Heavey has the ability to make the reader a part of the story. His successes and failures are everyman's. If you can't laugh at these stories, you probably need a sense of humor transplant. If you don't tear up after reading some of the stories, go read something else...
I'd like to say that Heavey covers all the emotions he's capabable of covering. A range that goes from A to B but he seems to push it down the field with this collection. Considerably. You begin to wonder what this guy is truly made of as you get a bit reshaped from the read.
Bill Heavy is one of the most epic comical outdoor writers of our time. If you are an outdoorswoman or outdoorsman you have to buy this book. His other books such as “If You Didn’t Bring Jerky, What Did I Just Eat” is just as funny.
Bill mixes a large helping of humor into the real life experiences of his oft-at-odds worlds - fatherhood and family, his love of the outdoors, fishing and hunting, suburban yuppies and the many more gnarly characters who inhabit his stories. Read this book. You'll laugh, cry and be transported to a better place. Bravo.
