This is a comprehensive, medical dictionary that is well organized and cross-referenced. Its use is made more interesting by the inclusion of etymologies. It is not, however, for doctors only. This veritable treasure trove of information is also a boon to lawyers. All who use it, however, should read the user's guide that is included with the book, in order to maximize its value.
Good dictionary. However, there are better ones (particularly Tabers). I have less physically attractive medical dictionaries with no color and a boring cover that seem to have the definitions I am looking for when Stedman's doesn't. Adequate dictionary but perhaps Taber's in a better value.
I have just begun a course in medical billing and coding and decided I needed a medical dictionary. There are numerous volumes out there, so I asked my instructor which one she would recommend, and this is it. So, I ordered it and have since decided she was absolutely right. There are two many bonus features in this 2,300 page book to list them all, but they include symbols to help you create the proper medical terminology, terrific color photographs, illustrations and charts. I'm sure this book will be at my side throughout school and into my working career.
This is an excellent book. The book is a good source for medical terms and their meanings. There are also nice color illustrations as well. The book also contained a CD-ROM which included a spellchecker and additional images. I highly recommend this book if you are planning to take any medical courses.
OK - I say I love it - NO, not really - It was a required text for my class, however, it was EXACTLY what I needed, and the price couldn't be beat! It was delivered within two days, the price was half what I could purchase it at the bookstore or any other online "student" website, and of course wtih 's guarantee, there's no way I could go wrong!Thank you , for continuing to be my "Go-To" location for all of my text-books, and no matter how much time I waste looking, you will continue to have the best prices!Even the bookstore has felt your impact - they have started offering a 10% discount to price match 's prices - the negative at the bookstore? You wind up waiting in line for 1-2 hours. I don't know about anyone else, but having ship it to my DOOR, have no inconvenience of going to the campus to stand in line with TONS of other irritated students, for the SAME price I can get at ??? It's a NO-Brainer! Gee, Why am I going to college - to learn what is making very obvious!
As a professor recently advised me, any student looking to go into medicine should have this book. I have my copy of Stedman's sitting right next to my workspace, and any time I encounter a word I don't immediately know while studying biology or anatomy, I look it up. It's one thing to memorize the meanings of things as they relate to your field of study, but it's entirely another to really understand what a word means before even approaching the topic you're studying; for instance, when we learned about the triangle of auscultation on the back in my advanced anatomy course, I'd never encountered the word "auscultation" before. Stedman's taught me that it means listening. So, I could have just remembered that this bizarre, unfamiliar word "auscultation" was related to the triangle of auscultation and memorized the fact that it's used to listen to sounds of respiration, or I could learn the meaning of the word and understand that the word "auscultation" tells you the clinical significance of the structure, as well as the fact that the word could be used in other ways relating to other structures.In short, this medical dictionary will allow beginners on the path to medicine to round out their medical vocabulary. Since so much of medical language is based in latin, it's helpful to have a guide nearby that can tell you what words like "brachium" or "teres" mean, allowing you to link the meanings of the words to the structures they describe. Sure, I could just Google each and every new word I come across, but Stedman's is quick, easy to use, and doesn't lead me down a rabbit hole of user-edited Wiki pages full of dubious information. Stedman's is THE medical dictionary for medical and premedical students!
I've been wanting a new edition of this book for years. I am a nurse, and love it for references. It has everything and more that I have wanted in one great book. Although it is large, and a little heavy, it doesn't deter me from using it as much as I want.Great purchase for a really great price! Arrived in mint condition, and arrived quickly. I am very satisfied with this purchase.
This is good if you know the medical word, but if your looking for a description and you want medical terms that go with it, forget it. Example: if I want the medical term for "stop breathing" it won't give me the medical word for it.
