My old 1971 Funk & Wagnalls practically required a fork lift to get off the shelf. Do I need to know that many words? This one has not been tried out but it can be lifted easily. I do need to drag out a magnifying glass or reading glasses to see the small print or it would probably get that coveted 5th star!. I am 74 so the print may not seem that small to everyone. Not fond of the dictionary apps on the Kindle - a book is much easier to search through.
Great easy to use reference that utilizes a split-page design displays full dictionary entries on the upper portion of each page and full thesaurus entries on the bottom part. The only downside is that this is not portable.
This combination dictionary and thesaurus from American Heritage is a good resource to keep by the desk. The top of each page holds concise definitions while the shaded area at the bottom functions as a thesaurus. This makes it easy to quickly look up the meaning of a word, its spelling, and synonyms all on the same page.
I bought this because I have a 3 year old who asks what everything is. While you generally know the definition of a word, it can be difficult to define for a 3 year old. Having a dictionary and thesaurus handy to give specific definitions is great. Also, it helps her learn where she can look for a word she does not know. She will say Mom, let's look it up, which is great. Now, I just need one for the car too.
Bought this for my son as it was required for school. I didn't want to pay the prices they would charge at the bookstore and was able to get this much cheaper on . So pleased with the fact that I saved some money on this one. It is a good resource for my son's homework. I have seen him use it quite often. Thanks
Though the content is good and easy to use and refer to. The binding of this book broke quite fast and the insides are nearly out of the book. We buy many books and handle them fairly well. It is very possible this was just a bad copy?
I got this as a gift for my wife, she's a word lover. Plays Scrabble so well that I hardly bother trying to compete. So every 5-10 years she needs a new dictionary, this combo was a great gift!
I bought this book not sure how often I would need it. I am so glad I did. The writing is large and it's very comprehensive.
