This is a review on behalf of my wife, who, despite my best efforts, now hates math more than she did before. She purchased it from Barnes & Noble, but I just had to review it, and I figured this would reach more people.First of all, I love math, and, at least as far as GRE-level math goes, I'm quite good at it.While the majority of the questions and answers were fine, some of the math problems were set up incorrectly; I could tell that they were aiming for a particular answer, which was given in the back; but I checked and double checked my work, and the question definitely does not work with for the answer they give. There were also several questions that had just plain wrong answers, or the correct answer was in the wrong place in the list. Some of the explanations are also confusing; they don't clearly convey concepts for problem-solving, but simply ask the student to keep trying different numbers until something works. Finally, for some reason, they put the section with the easiest math (fractions and percentages) at the very end. This makes no sense; If you start easy, and gradually increase the difficulty level, rather than starting with the most difficult questions, students won't get as frustrated.I know it's hard to set up all your questions and answers correctly, but it shouldn't cost too much to have a few nerds such as myself go through all of them before publishing a book like this.
I took the GRE twice. The first time I only used the "Cracking the GRE" companion book. The second time I took it I spent a few hours per week in the month leading up to the test reviewing with this book (1,007 GRE Practice Questions) and the "Cracking the GRE" book. I felt much more confident going in the second time (both because of my practice and taking it twice helps with the nerves). If you put the time into your studying and study for GOOD habits (as opposed to mindlessly answering questions), this book seems to be a good guide. My scores did go up quite a bit the second time, making making this book and taking the test very much worth the investment. My only complaint-- they need to include more tips for the "hidden plug in" section, but this was only one small part of the entire, very large, book.
Like the Official Guide, this book seriously lacks help for those who have forgotten their High School geometry and trigonometry. The math explanations for each answer skip the first critical steps and make the assumption that you already understand the subject. Therefore you spend a lot of time trying to figure out how they arrived at the answer. Frustrating. The math reviews are also not helpful. If they'd bothered to give s step-by-step mehod of answering problems salong with each formula, instead od giving scholarly definitions, it would have been a better investment of my money.
Great book! Lot's of drills to practice on, it should keep a reader busy for a long time.Pros:-Plenty of drills of on average 12-14 questions each-Drills categorized by question type e.g. Text Completion, Exponents and Square Roots so you can focus on your problem areas-One of the only big question books out thereCons:-Errors in the book. Not a lot, but enough to slightly annoy you e.g. wrong answers-Drills categorized by question type, but no mixed drills with all question types like the actual GRE-Not enough Verbal drills, but plenty of Quantitative drills
After you understand how the test will go and what it incorporates this is an excellent book to tackle. I'm saying to burn through this book in a week or two for a good summary study guide. Every section it has gives you practice questions. For example, quantitative reasoning has like 14 sections. Each section focuses on something different. One may focus on decimals and fractions, and others can focus on geometry. great book
I think the number of questions for this book is a really good starting point to practice, but there are so many inaccuracies in the math portion that makes you wonder how accurate the answer key really is. I've seen at least a handful of questions that state a multiple choice answer as incorrect, but in the full-explanation would hypocritically give the same answer with a different multiple choice.
This is a great supplemental resource if you're preparing for the GRE - I would recommend that anyone using the Princeton Review books also use this resource to continue to drill concepts and get experience and comfort with the question types.
Should have read reviews before purchasing this study aid in a brick and mortar store. I am absolutely appalled that this book has so many errors and that somehow on it still receives 4 stars. Having used both this book and the Kaplan series, I cannot discourage shoppers enough to steer clear. I used a number of The Princeton Review's other study aids in high school for AP testing and felt that they aided my score; I do not feel the same way about this book. Do not buy it!!
