I have four college guides (Fiske, Tanabe's America's Best Colleges, Princeton Review's Best 380, and the Insider's Guide), plus I subscribe to the US News college rankings. Each resource has its strengths, but the Fiske Guide to Colleges is the one I reach for first when I want to look up a school. Instead of just putting statistics in narrative form, or quoting students who have little basis for comparison, Fiske places each college in context and delineates the school's distinguishing features. For each entry, Fiske gives a list of "overlaps," competing colleges that share the same applicants, which is helpful information during the discovery phase of a college search. Fiske opens each college's entry with a summary paragraph that seeks to distill the unique essence of the college, often by differentiating it from its peer institutions. There are many places where you can get the bare facts about a college, but Fiske gives you an informed opinion that is much more valuable.

This is the best book out there. The anecdotal style of writing is very useful. Somewhat east-coast biased (covers all of the SUNY schools, but none of the Cal State institutions). Also has basic facts and figures to complement the writing and interviews.

This is a must have if your child is considering leaving the state for college. It's tremendously helpful, though not intended to be all encompassing so you'll have to visit or explore top choices more using other resources.

Look at the preview before buying. It really only has a small number of schools in here. The write ups are great, so if you are looking for a selective college (and I use that term loosely) or the biggest public college in each state this book is for you. I was shocked they had 1 of the University of Wisconsin colleges, 2 of the Michigan public universities. The same thing can be said about many other states. It seems to be geared more towards private schools. A few people have read how they "supposedly" chose their schools, but left scratching their heads too.

My granddaughter took the test in the front pages of the book that identifies what kind of college one wants. The test verified what we thought already - that she prefers a small college experience. The test was helpful to her. We are yet to use the rest of the book, but I perused it and I know that when she gets down to select which colleges to visit these very detailed descriptions will be helpful to her and her mom.

I purchased this book because I wanted an updated version since my last child did the college search. Well, Edition 32 2016 is almost identical to Edition 27 from 2011...really, like word for word regarding content. It also came with the cover almost totally ripped off. Waste of money.

Great guide. Not only do you get the professor's perspective, you get attending students as well. Came recommended to me by a family member who works in college admissions. Nice purchase and has received a lot of use by myself, college bound student and his 11th grade brother.

I love the in depth articles and statistics available for each school in the book, especially the more personal parts which give you a real feel for the school. Only thing is they had to make a shorter list which means it doesn't include every school you might want.
