I found out I was going to France and only had a few days to brush up on my high school French. This was just what I needed -- the perfect refresher course. I didn't bother listening to the CDs since I already had a basic knowledge of the language and pronunciation. However, I reviewed the very concise book on the flight over and was amazed at how well I handled the language once I got there. It gave me most everything I needed to get by. I was so impressed that I'm ordering the Spanish, Italian and Japanese (none of which I have any knowledge). Why bother with months and months of expensive classes when this gives me everything I need?
These "15 Minute..." foreign language series are wonderful. They're accessible, convenient, and simple. It doesn't bog you down with too much information on one page or section, nor does it give you phrases that may be a bit too informal or just ridiculous. After reading over one section at least 3 times you acquire the phrases and the words naturally without thinking too hard. Also, the colorful illustrations make it much more realistic and fun. I'd highly recommend it for those who may travel to France or those who are learning French. I like this series so much that I'm going to buy a 15 Minute German for my friends.
I have a whole Collection of Pimsuler's FRENCH, French For Dummies and Everything Learning French Book. However, this one takes the Cake. Very organized, concise, visually stimulating and to the point. I am actually having FUN without feeling overwhelmed or having an information overload headache. The CDs are perfect with the Text Book. People speaking are real FRENCH people and the text is very easy to follow. I wish they also had a DVD of this so I could take it with me everywhere along with my portable DVD player. As with any language, the more hours you put in mastering each level, the easier it gets to learn and speak it effortlessly, so nothing new here. They could easily have this as a TEXT Book for High School. It is true that I am a Language Geek but all other books and CDs I have purchased will give me more practice on what I am learning with this book. This book definately gets TWO THUMBS-UP from me and it is very affordable too. Great job DK Series and my sincere thanks to Caroline Lemoine!15-Minute French (Eyewitness Travel)
This reference volume is great for learning "travel" French. The dictionary in the back provides a good tool for emergencies, and reviews at the end of each section plus mock conversations help develop speaking skills. My favorite feature, especially for French, is the pronunciation guides after each word. This is a great resource!
This product is a good way to brush up your French and give you useful phrases for a visit to the country. Note that this product comes in two different packages. Both include the book but one includes two CD's. If you want the CD's, which help with pronunciation, make sure the package being offered contains them as it is not included in most sales of this item. The French are appreciative of anyone who attempts to speak their language and ones reception is notably enhanced by trying. This is a good way to be able to fulfill that condition.
